Javier Mendez, the head coach of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, has urged Charles Oliveira to ignore other fighters’ calls and ‘go for the money’ in his next fight, citing Conor McGregor as a perfect opponent.
The well-rounded Brazilian is on a brilliant run of form, winning his last eight fights. He impressively claimed a series of victories against Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier. He has the most finishes (20) and most submission wins (16) in UFC history.
Charles Oliveira Urged To Fight Conor McGregor
Justin Gaethje, after his dominant performance against Micheal Chandler in November, was declared as the next in line for the title shot by the UFC chief Dana White. Widely rumored to take on the UFC lightweight champion after White’s declaration, he has promised to exert his wrath on whoever meddles with his title shot.
He expressed his disgust at McGregor’s intention to jump the line to the title shot. The Irishman who insisted he’ll be getting a title shot after his recovery is set to be ‘The highlight’s’ first victim.
“I’d burn it all down, F*cking burn it down, that’s what I’d do. [Conor] is so irrelevant. He has not won a fight since 2016 in the lightweight division.”- Gaethje said when asked about McGregor’s interest.
Javier Mendez offers his thoughts
“Go for the money… The UFC is a business. They’re going to do what they’re going to do. So I would think that, look what Dustin did. What did Dustin do? Go for the title or go for the money? He went for the money,” Mendez said.
“So, a lot of these fighters have attended a certain status, they show their worth by what they do, they go for the money, whereas other fighters show their status with where their heart lies, where they go for the title. So in this particular case, I’m thinking, since he already has the title, he’s going for the money. Whoever is going to provide the most money for Charles is who I believe he will go with.”- he continued.
Speculations and uncertainties remain as to who Charles Oliveira’s next opponent is. A deal with a pay-per-view star like Conor McGregor is believed to be of the best interest to the champion and assures him a big paycheck.
