Iceland’s Gunnar “Gunni” Nelson (17-5) has been absent from MMA since September 2019 when he dropped a decision loss to fellow jiu-jitsu ace Gilbert Burns. Nelson has been with the UFC since 2012 and has 12 wins by submission over opponents such as Alan Jouban and Alex Oliveira.
In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Nelson revealed the reason for his long absence from the sport which was back to back-rib injuries one of which caused by grappling sparring with Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson; aka “The Mountain” from Game of Thrones. Nelson said that he has since recovered from these injuries and is ready to return. Gunnar Nelson’s last victory came in December 2018 against Alex Oliveira and before his lengthy absence, Nelson suffered back-to-back decision losses against top contenders Leon Edwards and Gilbert Burns.
