The hockey rumor mill is flowing and the Canucks are getting swept away with it. Regardless of how good the team does or how quickly they switched direction within the last month, the rumors were unavoidable. From a slow start which may have hindered their playoff hopes to expiring contracts all the way to empty spots within the front, Vancouver has a lot to talk about right now, so let’s dive into the rumors surrounding the Canucks.

General Manager Search

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks general manager search is almost over and the Canucks are down to the final four candidates. The conscious front runner is current Pittsburgh Penguins assistant general manager Patrik Allvin, while the other names being thrown around are Scott Mellanby and Sean Burke. It has been over one month since the Canucks relieved Jim Benning of his job as the Canucks and the NHL trade deadline is just two months away. Although the Canucks have Jim Rutherford running the show now as president they still need to make their decision on a general manager soon to be ready for the trade deadline.

Trade Talks

Currently, it is unknown who the Canucks are actively shopping, likely due to the fact they are in search of a general manager. Although the rumor mill is floating a few Canucks names around. Those players are forward Tyler Motte, goaltender Jaroslav Halak, and star forward J.T. Miller. With those three players, many questions arise but when the Canucks appoint a new general manager a serious evaluation will be made with Canucks and until then pretty much no one is safe, except the likes of Quinn Hughes and Thatcher Demko.

Interest In J.T. Miller

Multiple reports are surfacing that one of Miller’s former team’s has a growing interest in him. That team is the New York Rangers. This should come as no surprise as the Rangers are currently in the thick of things when it comes to the playoff race and Miller brings many things to the table. When things heat up it is almost a guarantee the Rangers will not be the only team vying for Miller’s services.

Roadblock With Halak

Jaroslav Halak’s name has been running rampant in the rumor mill for a few months now but the Canucks have seemed to hit a slight roadblock with that. When Halak signed his one-year deal in Vancouver this past season he was granted a no-movement clause and as Elliotte Friedman has reported Halak may not be willing to waive that clause. Although the veteran netminder can still play he may not be the right guy to back Demko up down the stretch and unfortunately for Vancouver, they may not have a say in the matter.

Is Motte As Good As Gone?

Likely, outside the Canucks stars Tyler Motte holds the most value, especially if he continues playing how he has the past few games. Motte is the type of player who can help push a hopeful to a contender in their bottom-six. Unfortunately for the Canucks Motte is a right player wrong time type of player. On the bright side though as a rental the Canucks grinder can fetch a mid-round or a young player come at the deadline and the Canucks won’t have to watch him walk into the sunset this offseason with no return.

Rumor Mill

Has the trade deadline approaches rumors will run wild. Players coming and leaving Vancouver will haunt fans up until March 21st. That is hockey though, it comes with the territory, but until then there is plenty to be excited about. Bruce Boudreau has seemed to turn the Canucks around, Thatcher Demko is an All-Star, and the Canucks will soon have a new general manager and the Benning era will be long gone.
