Current UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has been open about his disdain for fighters who use performance-enhancing drugs (PED) and added to that while speaking with Ariel Helwani.
Appearing on The MMA Hour, Sterling (20-3) discussed his thoughts on PED use once again, this time suggesting that individuals who test positive should face jail time for the infraction.
“This Is Not Like Playing Baskeball”
“That sh*t bothers me, man, it really does bother me,” Sterling said on The MMA Hour. You should do jail time for doing EPO, or steroids, or any type of shit like that in the UFC – in combat sports in general.”
“You can literally rearrange someone’s career, their livelihood, doing this contact sport, man. This is not like playing basketball, we’re not shooting hoops, we’re not hitting a baseball into the crowd, you know what I’m talking about? We’re dealing with life-changing events when you step into that Octagon. The ones that are stupid will say ‘well, no one put a gun to your head and told you to do this’. What? How is that a logical comeback to justify those actions? Like, what?!”
Sterling has also made claims directed at his next opponent, interim bantamweight champion Petr Yan. “Personally I think ‘Cheotr’ Yan is a dirty cheat. Maybe I’m wrong but I highly doubt it,” Sterling posted on Twitter.
“Fakemaster is looking for another fake excuse. Stop crying and start hiding pathetic mouse. The hunting season is officially open,” Yan said in response on Twitter.
Yan vs. Sterling 2 was initially announced for UFC 272 in March, but the bout was shifted to UFC 273, the following month. No official announcement has been made on the location of the event, but it is expected to take place at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.
