Arkansas Razorbacks: The Streak

January 7, 1989, was the last time the Arkansas Razorbacks did not make a 3-pointer in a game. At least, that is until last Tuesday night at Bud Walton Arena. In a 75-59 win over South Carolina, the Hogs went 0-11 from 3-point land, thus snapping a 1,092 consecutive game streak with a 3-pointer made. A bit of perspective on this: for the Hogs to go on another 1,092 games streak, it would last until 2055. A lot of basketball fans probably won’t even be around to see 2055.

With the win Tuesday night, the Hogs improved to 3-3 in SEC play, and head coach Eric Musselman was back coaching the team after a five-day absence due to shoulder surgery. After a sluggish 1st half, the Razorbacks were trailing by 7, 40-33.

Coach Musselman’s team turned things around in the final 20 minutes. The Razorbacks started the 2nd half with an 18-1 run, taking a 51-41 lead. This forced South Carolina head coach Frank Martin to call a time out in an attempt to stop the bleeding. Throughout the 2nd half, Arkansas’s defense was outstanding. Holding South Carolina to 19 points on 22.2% shooting (6 of 27). Tough man-to-man defense has been the Hogs calling card the last three games. In fact, it’s the first time since 2015 that the Razorbacks have held three straight SEC teams under 60 points.

Arkansas forward Jaylin Williams scored a career-high 19 points, to go along with 9 rebounds. JD Notae had a whale of a game with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and career-high 3 blocked shots. Senior forward Au’Diese Toney had a season-high 3 steals to contribute defensively. If this Arkansas team wants to put itself in a position to win games and make it to the NCAA Tournament, then team defense is the key. If they defend the rest of the regular season like they have the last three games, the NCAA Tournament is a realistic goal.

The Razorbacks 3-point streak ended Tuesday night – and that’s okay. Hog players and coaches made little mention of this streak post-game. The most important thing Tuesday night was getting a third straight SEC win. After starting SEC play 0-3, the Hogs have bounced back and now sit at 3-3 in conference play, putting themselves in a 3-way tie for 5th in the SEC.
