AC Milan once again stumbles and loses momentum in the Serie A race following a 2-1 defeat to Spezia on Tuesday evening. Emmanuel Gyasi’s 96th-minute winner brought Milan to their knees as they simply couldn’t find a winner. Milan’s loss opened the door for fellow rivals Napoli and Atalanta, whilst derby rivals Inter sit two points ahead with a game in hand.
Inter have momentum on their side following their Supercoppa win, and now look to add distance between them and their rivals. Milan, despite having 25 shots and 65% possession could not affect damage to a tightly defensive Spezia and now need to improve significantly if they are to mount a serious title challenge.
Milan next welcome 5th placed Juventus to the San Siro in a crucial battle to maintain their push for the title, and avoid Inter from breaking away and running away with the title. Inter’s draw with Atalanta will have eased the pressure on Milan but they will want to avoid any further stumbles.
Elsewhere, Mourinho’s inconsistent Roma was victorious against Cagliari thanks to Sergio Oliveira’s 33rd-minute penalty. Mourinho’s side is 7th on the table and looks nowhere near good enough to break into the top 4, with rumors that Everton is looking to hire the former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham manager.
Napoli beat Bologna 2-0 to maintain their push against the Milan rivals and looked impressive with Hirving Lozano the star of the show, as he bagged himself a brace. Napoli has a good run of fixtures ahead and will want to continue their run, as Juventus look to continue their stable run of form following a 2-0 victory of Udinese. Paulo Dybala and Weston Mckennie helped Juve overcome a well-managed Udinese side.
Matchday 23 sees some interesting fixtures for the Italian league, with the highlight of the week being Milan facing Juventus. Inter face Venezia in their game in hand fixture, while Napoli welcomes Salernitana as they push for momentum up the table. Roma faces a tough fixture against Empoli, and they’d hope their manager doesn’t have one eye on a return to the Premier League. Lazio welcomes Atalanta in what looks like a high-tempo matchup, with Atalanta looking to maintain the push for Champions League qualification.
There’s an exciting few weeks coming up for the Italian League and we are keeping a sharp eye out for any surprises.
