Reigning UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira will defend his title at UFC 274 against #1 ranked contender Justin Gaethje. The event was rumored to take place in Brazil, but it appears those plans have been scrapped. No official location or venue has been announced as of yet.
Charles Oliveira (32-8-0, 20-8-0 UFC) will step into the Octagon for his second defense after dispatching former interim champion Dustin Poirer via third-round submission at UFC 269.
After eight straight victories, Oliveira was matched up with former Bellator champion Michael Chandler to crown a new lightweight champion after former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement. Oliveira defeated Chandler 19 seconds into the second round of their UFC 262 bout to become the new king of the lightweight division.
Justin Gaethje (23-3-0, 6-3-0 UFC) closed out his 2021 with a fight of the year contender against Michael Chandler at UFC 268. Gaethje earned a unanimous decision victory and became the clear #1 contender in the division.
Gaethje was crowned the interim lightweight champion after dismantling Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. Five months later he faced the undisputed champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254. Gaethje lost the bout via second-round submission, but success in a three-round war with Chandler kept him in title contention.
After Oliveira’s successful defense against Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor inserted himself into the conversation and attempted to talk his way into a title fight with “Do Bronx” upon return. As news outlets began to suggest that McGregor could jump the line, Gaethje expressed his frustration.
“I’m fighting for the belt, man. My whole life I’ve been working toward this. That is what’s next,” Gaethje told TMZ Sports. “If not, I f*cking burn it down. It doesn’t matter. I will show up and start throwing dollies everywhere.”
Luckily, no dollies will be harmed as Gaethje will get the title opportunity this May.
No location or venue has been announced for UFC 274. Additional bouts scheduled for the event include:
- Glover Teixeira (C) vs. Jiri Prochazka (Light Heavyweight Championship)
- Macy Chiasson vs. Norma Dumont: women’s bantamweight bout
- Ariane Carnelossi vs. Loopy Godinez: strawweight bout
The card is subject to change, as always.
