It seems that Jon Jones has an interest in a potential fight with Stipe Miocic. It‘s a bit odd considering how in the last two years, Jon has been reluctant to fight Stipe or anyone for that matter. Negotiations have been at a stalemate for Jon ever since his victory over Dominick Reyes all the way back at UFC 247 in February of 2020. Jon’s relinquished Light Heavyweight Title was won by Jan Błachowicz vs Dominick Reyes at UFC 253 in September of 2020.
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones took to Twitter to tease a potential super fight between him and Stipe Miocic, saying, “Who wants to see the greatest light heavyweight of all-time versus the greatest heavyweight of all-time?”
This fight makes sense, but there has been little headway in Jones’ fighting status since he vacated the title. Could Jones be bringing up the start of something bigger?
How We Got Here
Stipe hasn’t fought since losing his Heavyweight Title to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 in March of 2021, with many thinking Jon would likely be the next challenger to the new champion but instead, it was Ciryl Gane due to legal issues with Jon and negotiations between himself and the UFC. Jon even went as far as to say: ”Don’t get excited people, I’m not fighting Stipe” in deleted tweets last year. He’s been quoted saying after Stipe lost the title; ”He doesn’t have the belt, he’s not the most famous, big mega fights” is what Jon is looking for so why now the change of heart?
Could This Be a Possibility?
With Ngannou now at a negotiation standstill between himself and the UFC after defeating Ciryl Gane earlier this year and having boxing offers looming around the corner, Jon sees an opportunity. We all know how the UFC operates, when a high-profile champion steps away due to negotiations, they’re prepared to make an interim title fight at any moment or even a vacant title fight. Jon knows this and knows he and Stipe can capitalize on this moment, the fight sells itself. Stipe Miocic, the greatest UFC heavyweight fighter of all-time vs Jon Jones, the greatest UFC light heavyweight fighter of all time for the interim/vacant UFC Heavyweight Title with Francis Ngannou potentially waiting on the winner, drama sells.
The UFC should and most likely will pursue this fight while Francis is deciding what to do with his future. Money makes the world go round, and the UFC is a business, so whatever makes the most money, makes the most sense.
