The Houston Texans have hired their second head coach in as many years as of yesterday, as well as made some changes to the staff. So with all these changes happening in Houston, what’s next?

No more problems in Houston?

On Monday the Texans officially announced the hiring of defensive coordinator Lovie Smith as the new head coach. This news came just a day after it was announced that Smith had emerged as a candidate. Smith is well-liked amongst the locker room and so his hire makes the most sense.

Lovie Smith was one of the three finalists for the head coach position in Houston, beating out former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, and former NFL quarterback Josh McCown.

The team also announced during a press conference that Smith will still call plays for the defense, despite them looking for a new DC.

The Texans also announced that they’ve promoted quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton to Offensive Coordinator following Smith’s hiring.

With all this change in the coaching staff, will Houston bounce back next season?

New Era in HTown

With these hirings/promotions, the Texans should get better, Pep Hamilton will bring a new scheme offensively to help build around second-year QB Davis Mills, while Lovie Smith will command his defense.

Being that Smith has lots of experience at the HC level, also means he has connections. Smith is loved league-wide by many players so Houston could become a top landing zone for free agents this summer.

General Manager Nick Caserio is still finding ways to improve his team, and they need a DC. Expect Jerod Mayo to be a top candidate for the position.

If the Texans can draft well and sign some key free agents, Houston should be right back into contention for the AFC South title.

Final Thought

As a Texans fan myself, I’m stoked about this hiring. Lovie is loved by the players, and Pep can turn the offense around. Expect big things from Houston next season.
