A big flyweight matchup has been scheduled for UFC 274 in May.

On May 7, Brandon Royval will take on fellow flyweight Matt Schnell. While the UFC has not made an official announcement, Royval’s management team Iridium Sports confirmed the bout on Twitter. Currently scheduled for the event is a light heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Charles Oliveira and #1 contender Justin Gaethje.

Brandon Royval (13-6, 3-2 UFC) entered the UFC in 2020 after going 6-2 under the LFA banner, winning the LFA flyweight championship in his last bout with the promotion. Royval only needed 23 seconds to dispatch his opponent Nate Williams to win LFA gold and earn his way to the UFC.

Royval made an immediate impact defeating both Tim Elliott and Kai Kara-France via second round submission. Unfortunately he followed up those two victories with two defeats, coming against former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno and Alexadre Pantoja. Royval got back on the winning track with a split decision victory over Rogerio Bontorin in January and hopes to make it two-in-a-row at UFC 274.

Matt Schnell (15-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) first appeared under the UFC banner on the 24th season of The Ultimate Fighter. During his time in the house, Schnell earned a submission victory over Matthew Rizzo, but lost his second round bout to Tim Elliott. Despite this, Schnell was signed to the UFC. After back-to-back losses, Schnell rattled off four straight wins against Marco Beltra, Naoki Inoue, Louis Smolka and Jordan Espinosa.

Since December 2019, Schnell has only competed in the Octagon three times, going 1-2 in the process with the lone victory coming against Tyson Nam. With a win over Royval, Schnell could catapult himself into the top five and find himself within range of a title shot.

Originally rumored to take place in Rio De Janeiro, UFC 274 is expected to remain stateside though no location or venue has been announced as of this writing. The event was expected to be headlined by Glover Texeira and Jiri Prochazka for the UFC light heavyweight title, but recent news stated that the fight will be pushed back to June. Other bouts current scheduled for the event include:

  • Joe Lauzon vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Norma Dumont
  • Ariane Carnelossi vs. Lupita Godinez
  • Blagoy Ivanov vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima
  • C.J. Vergara vs. Kleydson Rodrigues
  • Journey Newson vs. Fernie Garcia

Card subject to change.
