Michael Conforto To The Phillies Makes Sense

The Phillies desperately need to acquire outfielders, the only starting outfielder they have is right fielder, Bryce Harper. The Phillies need to address their need in the outfield this offseason. However, one option for the Phillies outfield may not be that difficult to find. Former Mets outfielder Michael Conforto is set to be a free agent this offseason and this could be a really good match for the Phillies corner outfield position. The Phillies need outfielders, and signing one from a division rival could be a big asset to the Phillies.

His Accomplishments

Conforto has had a solid MLB career up to this point. The 28-year-old outfielder has spent the entirety of his career with the New York Mets. Conforto"s career stats are the following, .255 batting average, 650 hits, 132 home runs, 396 RBIs, .356 on-base percentage, a slugging percentage of .468, and an OPS of .824. Overall, Conforto has had solid numbers throughout his career, nothing out of this world. However, he is a good baseball player, nothing that is amazing, but he is good in a multitude of things. The only accolade to Conforto"s name is he was an All-Star back in 2017.

This matchup seems almost perfect. The Phillies need outfielders, Conforto is a solid outfielder looking to find a new team. Now that the Mets revamped their lineup, they may not have a need to bring Conforto back. The matchup for Conforto and the Phillies could work out really well. We have seen instances where the Phillies have gone after players from within their division. Examples being, Zack Wheeler and J.T. Realmuto. The Phillies are not afraid to make the moves to benefit their team within their own division.

Looking Forward

If the Phillies were to sign Conforto, I think he wouldn"t be very expensive. In the past two seasons, Conforto hasn"t played as well as he has in the past. I believe the Phillies could sign him to a deal around two to three years. It really depends on how confident the Phillies are with Conforto as their everyday left fielder. In addition, the Phillies don"t have a lot of left-handed batters in their starting lineup, as of now only being Bryce Harper and Didi Gregorious, so adding that left-handed bat could also be beneficial to the lineup. I believe the fit is there for the Phillies to go out and sign Conforto, it really revolves around if the Phillies are ready to pull the trigger.
