With a new Major League Soccer season upon us, it is time for a new weekly piece to highlight what happens in the MLS. Week one of the MLS proved to show some dominant performances, some disappointing performances, and some surprising results that not many people may have expected. This new weekly series will feature my picks for Goal of the Week, Assist of the Week, Player of the Week, among other weekly awards.

Major League Soccer Team Of The Week

Major League Soccer announced their Week 1 Team Of The Week Monday, February 28.

The MLS announced their weekly Team Of The Week, with LAFC forward Carlos Vela headlining the group after his hat-trick week one against Colorado.

Three Week 1 Standouts

The first standout this week is Mexican international Carlos Vela. How could he not be the first standout as he scored all three of LAFC’s goals this past Saturday? Carlos Vela returned to the form he showed when he first came to Major League Soccer, and if Saturday was any indication of what this season is going to be like for Vela, then he should be the frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player award.

The second standout from week one is Lucas Zelerayan from the Columbus Crew. Lucas provided the assist to forward Miguel Berry to open the scoring for the Crew, and finished off a 4-0 victory of Vancouver with a goal of his own. It may not have been one of Zelerayans best games in a Crew uniform, but it shows his quality that even when he’s not at his best, he can still contribute massively to his team.

The third standout from week one is Austin FC midfielder, Cecilio Dominguez. Dominguez recorded two goals in a 5-0 thrashing of FC Cincinnati. He scored his first goal in the 2nd minute, followed by his second in the 61st minute.

Goal Of The Week – Yimmi Chara

Portland Timbers Yimmi Chara scored the best goal of the weekend that helped the Timbers salvage a 2-2 draw against New England. Chara scored a bicycle kick in the 78th minute to finish the game in a draw.
