Travis Konecny RW/LW

Per thefourthperiod.com the New Jersey Devils along with the Los Angeles Kings, and the Toronto Maple Leafs all share interest in acquiring the Flyers winger. His one-year Offensive metrics are underwhelming on a very bad Flyers offensive system and are not known to be a 2 way forward. In his 3 year trend, you’re acquiring his services because he can score at least 5 goals above replacement vs. slightly under Expected 5 goals above replacement. His productivity is there and is normally a 24 goal scoring guy on a highly offensive steep team netting 47 to 61 points for a team that is usually playoff bound.

Konecny To NJ?

Why would Philly end up trading him to New Jersey? During Chuck Fletcher’s tenure with the New Jersey Devils and having known Tom Fitzgerald as someone who was a step below the Assistant GM role to Chuck. Chuck took over the GM job when Ron Hextall was fired in Philadelphia.

The networking connections with Tom Fitzgerald who later on took over for Ray Shero after Taylor Hall was traded later to Arizona which has become beneficial for the Devils. That day when Fitzgerald was promoted giving Dan MacKinnon the Assistant GM role that Fitzgerald held prior to Fletcher being hired as the GM in Philly.

It would be the first time in a while the Devils pulled the trigger on a player like Konecny. The last time the Devils acquired a player within their own division was Michael Grabner from the New York Rangers under Ray Shero’s tenure as GM.

Pavel Zacha LW/C

A source close to the matter messaged recently telling me that it thought names like Conor Garland which was mentioned a lot behind the scenes and the market for him “has cooled off a bit.” Another note saying Pavel Zacha might be in play for NJ but thinks other teams not reported or mentioned who have taken a look at how Pavel can fit in.

Kevin Fiala LW

Source told me ”there’s something with Fiala and NJ… given the pro scouting efforts with having some guys based in that area watch a ton of Wild games. Maybe Zacha is a guy involved in that. That’s a summer deal though if it happens.” I personally see Kevin Fiala more as a fit and the Devils have connections to Minnesota GM and Devils alum Bill Guerin.

You’re gonna get a lot of nectar out of Fiala offensively and he does draw his fair share of penalties while in transition on offense. Kevin’s near 6 goals above replacement is under his xGAR of near 10 in a 3-year average. His numbers this year have a GAR of over 5 and xGAR nearing 10.

Kevin is on pace for 27 goals and 73 points due to the fact he utilizes his speed and hockey IQ on the rush and in transition. He’s the kind of guy who perfectly fits that top 6 roles if the Devils can fetch a Brock Boeser or even Connor Garland by the deadline. The Devils have the assets to get a guy like Fiala but would Minnesota be willing to part with him?

Conclusions

I do see the New Jersey Devils making a few trades but there may not be the blockbusters we are hoping for. Due to the demand and the lack of buyers and sellers looking to make a flurry of trades. Tom Fitzgerald is the kind of GM that factors in Quality over quantity and he is very good at sticking to his values when making and finalizing a deal like the past few seasons.

Tom is not going to do a fire sale but he’ll be looking to add as many near-term and controllable assets so he can bolster the team in front while looking for very solid goaltending to back up Nico Daws.
