Head coach of the Detroit Red Wings Jeff Blashill said today that the team fears that Robby Fabbri has torn his ACL. This is devastating news for Fabbri who is in the top five in scoring on the Red Wings’ team. Fabbri has scored 17 goals and added 13 assists in 56 games played for the team during the 2021-22 NHL season. Taro Hirose has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings AHL affiliate to replace Fabbri.
Robby Fabbri has provided scoring for Red Wings
After being drafted 21st overall in the 2014 NHL entry draft, Fabbri was acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Jacob de La Rose in November of 2019. The Blues must have known that Fabbri could not crack their lineup and was thus in need of a fresh start. In his time for the Red Wings Fabbri has scored 41 goals in 138 games played in three seasons so far for the Red Wings.
The timing of this injury is unfortunate. The trade deadline for the NHL is on Monday, March 21st. The Red Wings have many options when it comes to what to do at the deadline. General manager Steve Yzerman must know that the team still needs improving. This was evident as they recently lost a game by a score of 9-2 to the Arizona Coyotes. Perhaps this was just one-off night for the team, or perhaps the defensive structure of the team is not up to par.
The Red Wings currently sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 55 points. The team continues to improve under head coach Blashill. The team will need to rely on player such as Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Jakub Vrana for scoring in the absence of Fabbri. Vrana was acquired for Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals in 2021. They will have to play for each other much like they did to start the 2021-22 season. The blessing is that this knee injury is not the same knee that Fabbri has injured in the past.
