The San Francisco 49ers free agency begins next week, and they have a few areas that need to be addressed specifically but could also have room for a luxury signing after Jimmy Garoppolo’s trade goes through and some salary cap gymnastics.
According to Spotrac.com, the cap hit for Garoppolo this upcoming season is currently set to be $26.9 million which works out at 12.85% of the team’s total cap room for the season.
With the Colts, Saints and Steelers still among the teams to be in the hunt for a new top quarterback, this is the opportune time to put the faith in young quarterback Trey Lance and bring in a strong supporting cast to add to this current playoff team.
Here we have a look at the top five 49ers free agency targets going into what will be a very busy free agency period before the 2022 season:
San Francisco 49ers Free Agency Targets
Anytime a player of Tyrann Mathieu’s quality is available you have to want to go and get him because he WILL strengthen your team, especially in a secondary that had its struggles throughout the 2021 season. While Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt are solid safeties, Mathieu would instantly be a starter and if possible he should be highly sought after.
An elite corner who recently recovered from injury, Stephon Gilmore played nine total games last year with three starts. In those three starts he recorded two interceptions, two passes defended, 16 combined tackles with 15 solo tackles.
It was a surprise to everyone that New England Patriots did not franchise tag J.C Jackson after an All-Pro and Pro Bowl season with the Patriots, and he will be one of the more sought-after defensive backs in free agency.
The Patriots look to be revamping their defense, and the fact they have not signed last year’s Pro Bowler looks like they are moving on from him which could open up an opportunity for John Lynch and the 49ers to add some more quality to their defense.
With the hiring of Anthony Lynn, we could see Tyrod Taylor come in as the backup quarterback for Lance. Taylor is one of the best available backup quarterbacks available this offseason and could see the former Buffalo, Chargers, and Texans quarterback make the switch to the west coast.
With Taylor’s experience across the league, this could be a fantastic move for the Niners. If for any reason, Lance does struggle, Taylor would be more than capable of coming in and steadying the ship as well as imparting wisdom on the young ball-slinger.
Other options for the backup quarterback position could be Marcus Mariota or Mitchell Trubisky. However, both players look to be targeting starting jobs at other NFL destinations.
With the Saints being so far over the cap — over $40 million — there looks to be no chance of them resigning offensive tackle Terron Armstead which could open an opportunity for the Niners to pick him up to help protect Lance.
There are a few offensive linemen that could have fit the bill here however it all depends on if the franchise opts to re-sign Laken Tomlinson. If they do and bring in some more offensive line power in the form of Armstead it could give the offense a massive boost not only with their pass protection but also in the run game.
