Following his victory over Jack Hermansson, Strickland fantasizes about his chances against the big names in the division calling Paulo Costa in the process. However, the two sides turned to social media to launch jibes at each other, stirring the atmosphere surrounding the proposed bout.
Despite being one of the most controversial figures in the UFC, the 30-year old, on a six-fight winning streak, had previously called out Darren Till and Paulo Costa but most recently singled out “Borrachinha” as his preferred next opponent.
“Instagram blocked me, joked about a pedophile dying and I guess they didn’t like it lol!!!! Anyways I’m not fighting Darren Till. I want (Paulo) Costa and if Costa can’t put down the wine and cookies I want Jack (Hermansson),” Strickland tweeted.
Costa, coming off back-to-back losses to Marvin Vettori and Israel Adesanya, backfired and engaged in a foul-mouthed outburst with Strickland. “Let’s do it rat,” Costa tweeted, coupled with a Brazilian Portuguese phrase that translates to – “We’ll see if he is a bully.”
Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa Beef
Strickland, not one who hesitates to take on such challenges, was quick to respond to Costa, while also declaring the UFC was the actual reason the fight didn’t materialize.
“I asked for Costa and the UFC didn’t seem so confident in his future, Also, I don’t think they liked me punching down to get a title shot lol, but worst case for you Costa there is always Bellator… maybe 205?” Strickland stated.
Costa’s weight made the headlines when the Brazilian arrived in Las Vegas, incapable of making the average weight limit of 186 pounds. Before settling in a light heavyweight contest, the fight was finally transferred to 195-pound to accommodate Costa. The “205” comment in Strickland’s response was a sly dig at the whole scenario that unfolded in Costa’s previous fight. A statement which he did not take lightly and was swift in continuing the public altercation with Strickland.
“I knew you were a f****** p****, but this show of insecurity surprised even me. Just another fake macho,” Costa said.
Strickland again stressed the UFC’s unwillingness to set up a match for both fighters and offered to take on Costa outside the octagon if the need arises…
“Here’s the thing man, the UFC said no, I asked multiple times, but after you’re forced to move to light heavyweight, I’ll catch you in Vegas, and if you wanna run your mouth I’ll give it to you for free.”- he stated.
Costa, whose interest in the clash did not subside, accused his challenger of concealing himself, which was an end to the public altercation. “Sean Strickland, have you cleaned up, or do you still have your pants shit on? Will you fight me or stand hiding, it’s ok just let me know” Costa said.
As the bad blood between the two fighters escalates and the division’s best contenders secure their respective matchups, a fight between these two makes perfect sense.
