After bursting onto the scene with back-to-back wins just 10 days apart, Khamzat Chimaev will face his toughest challenge yet when he squares off with #2 ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns at UFC 273.

That hasn’t stopped ‘Borz’ from laying down a challenge to virtually every other fighter under the UFC banner. While speaking with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Chimaev took a moment to talk about a potential fight with Colby Covington while throwing some shade at Covington’s last two opponents, Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal

“If Usman (will be out for a long time), I’d fight with Colby, and I’d kill that guy. Nobody could (really) knock him out,” he told The MMA Hour. “(You have to)  knock him out like (he’s) dead, (so he can’t) talk more. That’s how to do it. Usman couldn’t do that, Masvidal couldn’t do that. I’m gonna do it.”

“The Door is Open”

This isn’t the first time the two fighters have gone toe-to-toe in the media. In an interview with MMA Fighting, Covington was asked if he would entertain a fight with the surging welterweight.

“He’s a joke. He needs to beat someone worthy — someone in the top 5, someone in the top of the rankings, not just fight hand-picked people.” Covington said of Chimaev while speaking with MMA Fighting. “What does he have, four UFC fights? The media loves to rush these kids and these hype jobs. This is fighting, man. People can get seriously hurt from rushing people like that. But if you guys want to rush a guy, take some time off of his life and send him for a hospital treatment, then, yeah, the door is open for that.”

It didn’t take long for Chimaev to respond on social media in a series of tweets.

Before we can start discussing the possibility of a clash between Chimaev and Covington, ‘Borz’ will need to get past former title challenger Gilbert Burns on April 9. ‘Durinho’ is 3-1 in his last four bouts, the lone loss coming to reigning champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 258.

With a victory over Burns, Chimaev could find himself on the cusp of a welterweight title shot, but a fight with Covington is an intriguing possibility that the UFC would, at the very least, entertain.
