Kay Hansen does not know what went wrong at the UFC 273 weigh in on Friday morning after coming in heavy for her strawweight bout.
Hansen weighed in at 118.5 pounds for her scheduled bout against Piera Rodriguez on Saturday night. That is 2.5 pounds over the strawweight limit of 116 pounds for non-title fights. Hansen chose not to cut additional weight. As a result, the fight will go on as scheduled, but Hansen will forfeit 20% of her fight purse to Rodriguez.
Hansen, who has competed in both the strawweight and flyweight divisions, had never missed weight until stepping onto the scale Friday. Hansen took to social media to apologize for the weight cutting blunder shortly after.
“I have had over 14 professional fights (98% being at 115lbs) and have always made weight fairly easy. I don’t walk heavy, I diet year round and live a very disciplined lifestyle. I have no excuses but I’m not sure what went wrong. I’m extremely disappointed and I wanna apologize to my team, opponent, the UFC.
With that being said I’m still grateful and excited to go out and perform at UFC 273. Going to put this behind me and address it later, and focus on my performance tomorrow night. Love y’all.”
In an interview with MMA Fighting, Hansen discussed her struggle with an eating disorder in the past, though there is no indication that it played any part in her missing weight on Friday.
“I’ve struggled with an eating disorder for a while. It’s something that I’ve struggled with outside of fighting too, but being in a sport that revolves around feeling and looking at peak athleticism, and around weight, I just let it get out of hand.”
Since signing with the UFC, Hansen has gone 1-2 in her last three bouts. She defeated Jinh Yu Frey via submission in her promotional debut, but has since lost back-to-back fights against Cory McKenna and Jasmine Jasudavicius.
With two straight losses and now missing weight, Hansen’s back may be against the wall when she steps into the Octagon on Saturday night.
Bantamweight Julio Arce was the only other fighter to miss weight during the official UFC 273 weigh in. Arce weighed in at 136.5 pounds, 0.5 pounds over the bantamweight limit for non-title bouts.
