Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk have verbally agreed to run it back at UFC 275 in June.
UFC’s chief business officer Hunter Campbell confirmed to ESPN that both fighters have verbally agreed to the rematch and bout agreements will be sent out shortly. ESPN reporter Marc Raimondi broke the news on Twitter.
Airing live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, UFC 275 is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between reigning champion Glover Teixeira and the #2 ranked contender, Jiri Prochazka.
The rematch between Jedrzejczyk and Weili will run back one of the greatest fights in UFC history. At UFC 248, fans were treated to a five round war that saw Weili earn a closely contested split decision, a decision that many fans did not agree with.
Zhang Weili (21-3-0, 5-2-0 UFC) burst into the UFC, earning three straight victories on her way to a title opportunity against Jessica Andrade in August 2019. Weili needed just 42 seconds to finish Andrade via TKO and earn UFC gold. Her first defense came against Jedrzejczyk in the bout many fans consider to be the greatest women’s fight in MMA history.
After her bout with Jedrzejczyk, Weili would go on to drop the UFC strawweight championship to former champion Rose Namajunas at UFC 261. In their UFC 268 rematch, ‘Thug Rose’ was once again victorious. Despite the back-to-back MMA losses for the first time in her career, Weili is still the #1 ranked strawweight contender and is arguably one good performance away from another title opportunity.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk (16-4-0, 10-4-0 UFC) has not stepped into the Octagon since that historic fight with Weili over two years ago. As a result, Jedrzejczyk is no longer listed in the UFC’s strawweight rankings. That could quickly change with a win over Weili at UFC 275. A victory will likely propel Jedrzejczyk into a title opportunity against the winner of Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza which is scheduled to go down at UFC 274 in May.
Jedrzejczyk earned 8 straight victories in the UFC, defeating Esparza for the strawweight championship in the process, but has recently experienced some setbacks in the Octagon. Like Weili, she lost back-to-back title fights to ‘Thug Rose’ and has since alternated wins and losses earning victories over Tecia Torres and Michelle Waterson while dropping bouts to Valentina Shevchenko and, most recently, Weili.
Also scheduled for UFC 275, women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is expected to defend her title. Challenging ‘Bullet’ is the #4 ranked flyweight contender, Taila Santos. No broadcast plan has been announced for the event at this time. Bouts currently scheduled include:
- Glover Teixeira(c) vs. Jiri Prochazka – UFC Light Heavyweight Championship
- Valentina Shevchenko(c) vs. Taila Santos – UFC Flyweight Championship
- Robert Whittaker vs. Marvin Vettori
- Kyung Ho Kang vs. Saimon Oliveira
- Brendan Allen vs. Jacob Malkoun
Card subject to change.
