Ever since Darren Till switched his training camp to that of Khamzat Chimaev‘s, the pair have publicly formed one of the strongest friendships in the promotion.

The Englishman has been training with Chimaev after joining the Allstars Training Center in Sweden in a bid to rekindle his form. Many people in the MMA world label the friendship ‘weird,’ but it has not driven both fighters back as they have helped each other in training, opened a youtube show, and even attended podcasts together.

Darren Till Reflects on Khamzat Chimaev’s Win Over Gilbert Burns

Despite having just fought five times in the octagon, with only Gibert Burns taking him the distance, you could say it’s a safe bet to imagine ‘Borz’ has the potential to be a champion in the long run.

Till, who has always lauded praise for his compatriot, chimed in on the swede’s surge to the top of his division’s ranking.

“I did the same exact thing when I beat ‘Cowboy’. I went straight to the number one contender with ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and beat the ‘Wonderboy’. Like, it’s the exact same scenario like me, and it was just the same in every way and aspect”- Till said in an interview with Submission Radio.

Burns (20-5) was one of the few athletes willing to face the undefeated star Chimaev, heading into the contest as an underdog. The bout was a heavily heated contest, with the two superstars showing their capabilities to the max. Chimaev secured the victory with a unanimous decision win, one that caused a split in the MMA world.

Darren Till Has a Word for Chimaev’s Critics

Having likened the Russia-born fighter’s rise to his, he used the opportunity to lash back at Chimaev’s critics. ‘The Gorilla’ questioned the fans’ gruesome hate for Chimaev, while also reflecting on his latest heroic win against Gilbert Burns as an eye-opener.

“It’s like, people are saying, ‘Oh well,’ you know? … He was messing about before… The guy with number 11, he’s had four fights in the UFC and he just come in and beat the number two guy… How can you hate on the guy like, for that s**t? The guy’s a f*****g superstar. The guy’s the only legitimate superstar right now in the UFC, ”he continued.

Before Khamzat’s fight at UFC 273, he has been hit just twice in four UFC fights so far, including only one significant strike finishing all of his ten fights in the second round. Till claimed ‘Borz’ still has more in his bag to offer in the octagon and, further speaking in the interview, believes the matchup against Burns would be adding a new dynamic to his fight.

“I know what Khamzat has inside him. The best thing for this fight is that he’s tasted a bit of like getting punched and authentically digging deep for the win. Because that changes you… I said to him backstage, that’s what you needed. This is probably the best outcome you can have had because now you’re going to train even harder and now you’re going to listen to your coach’s strategy more. It’s not just about going out there and knocking guys out”

‘Durinho’ went home with his full purse despite his loss, and the Brazilian fighter has expressed his interest in taking on Khamzat once more. The unbeaten fighter, however, would not be looking to step back into the ring against Burns as he has his sights set on a title bout and became just closer to the title after his most recent win.

Regardless of where Chimaev goes from here, picking the brain of a title contender in his quest for gold can only be a good thing, as there’s no replacement for experience.
