Per a report from MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, the UFC is in the process of finalizing an interim flyweight title bout between former champion Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France.

Per Helwani’s sources, the bout is being targeted for UFC 277 on July 30th. Current flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo was slated to defend his title against Moreno in what would be the duo’s fourth straight contest. However, Figueiredo is said to be recovering from an injured finger that will further delay his return and a potential quadrilogy with Moreno.

As a result, Kai Kara-France will step in to take on ‘The Assassin Baby’ this summer to crown an interim champion and clear #1 contender to Figueiredo’s gold.

Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France Run Back Their 2019 Bout

Kai Kara-France (24-9-0 MMA, 7-2-0 UFC) is currently riding a three fight win streak in the UFC. His most recent appearance saw him defeat Askar Askarov via unanimous decision in March 2022. ‘Don’t Blink’ also holds victories over Cody Garbrandt and #8 ranked flyweight Rogerio Bontorin. Kara-France’s first loss in the UFC came in December 2019 against Moreno.

Brandon Moreno (19-6-2 MMA, 7-3-2 UFC) will face someone not named Deiveson Figueiredo for the first time since 2020. Morena rattled off four straight victories against Maikel Perez, Kara-Frace, Jussier Formiga and Brandon Royval before earning a short notice opportunity against division rival Figueiredo.

In their first outing at UFC 256, the judges ruled the bout a majority draw. Six months later, they would run it back at UFC 263 where Moreno would submit Figueiredo via a third round rear-naked choke. In January 2022, they would once again square off. This time, Figueiredo would score a unanimous decision victory to recapture UFC gold.

UFC 277 does not currently have a venue, though Helwani reports per his sources that Dallas is the front-runner to host the mid-summer event. No additional bouts have been announced, but the highly anticipated rematch between Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes is slated to go down on the July 30 card.
