At only 19 years old, Erling Haaland is making a lot of waves. He is considered one of the best strikers in the world, a prodigy of Man City’s own Alfie Haaland, and has proven to live up to the name in his time at Borussia Dortmund. But now the Norwegian player has landed on British soil, having been signed to his father’s club, Manchester City, and fans are ecstatic. There is nothing but good cheers coming from the press and the fans as Haaland wraps up his time with Borussia Dortmund and makes his way to Manchester for the start of the next Premier League season. He is considered the face of The Blues before he’s even worn the strip. But they are not the only one. It’s clear the Premier League is eyeing up Haaland as the new face of the Premier League. We explore what the Premier League’s intentions are for Haaland here.
If the Premier League Has Anything to Say About It
There is a lot on Haaland’s side that makes him the perfect poster boy. For one thing, he brings with him a narrative that you couldn’t make up. The 19-year-old son of a prodigy is joining the club his father played for – and he’s bringing the talent to back it up. Any skeptics thinking that he bought and networked his way in need only look at his record with Dortmund to be silenced.
Haaland was considered a bargain and yet his substantial fee got him to the record of 23rd most expensive transfer in football history. This should tell you something of the value of the Norwegian player. The Premier League are well aware of this and paired with the family legacy and the obvious talent on display, it all makes for a very valuable asset that can do more than score goals.
Maybe, for now…
If you were to ask the Man City player himself, you might find Haaland doesn’t have much interest in the Premier League. He had expressed that it is the right move for him right now, but that he has bigger dreams of playing in La Liga for a Spanish team.
You can already imagine Barcelona and Real Madrid rubbing their hands. Even with the financial strain Barcelona is under at the moment, you can imagine them searching the sofa for a few million to hand over at the close of Haaland’s current contract with Man City. But we have a good five years to get through before that where Man City can put Haaland to good use. Click here to grab some Man City tickets and see for yourself what he can do.
Conclusion
The Premier League can surely try to make Haaland their poster boy, and surely, they will, but if Haaland doesn’t find something to love about the Premier League in the next five years, he will be off like a shot and free to smile for Spanish cameras instead.
