With the Premier League season coming to an end, it’s that time of year when we turn our heads to transfers. On this occasion, Aston Villa have been quick out the gates with the signing of Boubacar Kamara from Olympique Marseille on a free transfer. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a five-year deal at Villa Park.
Why Have Villa Signed Boubacar Kamara?
Boubacar Kamara has been a stalwart of Marseille this season in Ligue 1, where the club finished as runners up.
The midfielder came through the youth ranks at Marseille and has since played 170 games for the club. That is wildly impressive for a player that is only 22 years old at a top club in a major European league, and something not often seen in the modern game.
Kamara is primarily a defensive midfield player but is also used regularly at centre half. The Frenchman is known for his ability to play the ball out from the back and break the opposition’s press. From a defensive point of view, the player shows great footballing intelligence. Kamara finds himself in positions to make interceptions regularly.
This is backed up by the statistics too; Kamara makes 1.4 interceptions and 2 successful tackles per 90 minutes played. This outscores Morgan Sanson, Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz, Aston Villa’s three current options in the defensive midfield area.
Kamara also boasts an excellent 91% pass completion rate which again is significantly higher than his competition for the role at Villa. This is particularly impressive when you note that the player makes 70.2 passes p/90 which is far higher than his closest competitor at Villa- Douglas Luiz who plays 40.2 passes p/90.
His recent performances have been so noteworthy that the defensive midfielder has just received his first full international call up to Didier Deschamps’s French squad for the upcoming Nations League matches.
A Big Future Ahead
With stats like these, it’s easy to see why there is such excitement around Kamara. It seems clear that the player represents the modern defender.
Kamara is a good passer of the ball, has the ability to read the opposition’s play and also can move into multiple positions. This makes him an absolute steal for Aston Villa to get the player on a free transfer. Especially when considering the player was being monitored by big spending clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United.
When asked for comment, Villa coach Steven Gerrard could not hide his excitement saying,
I am delighted that we have been able to attract one of the most promising young talents in European football. We have a very clear plan to make our team stronger and Bouba is an important part of that.Steven Gerrard via Aston Villa Football Club
