After months of speculation on whom will be the next head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, they have finally settled on a candidate. Enter, Darvin Ham. Now, I’m not going to sit here and act like I’m an expert on Darvin Ham. Because quite frankly, I’m not. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t take a look at his resume, and hope to formulate some kind of opinion based on what we do know about him. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Let’s get started.

Fan Reaction

Judging by the reaction from Lakers Nation on Twitter after Woj broke the news of the hiring, most fans seem to celebrate this hire. To be fair, Ham seemed to be the favorite from the start of this process once his name was mentioned as a candidate.

More importantly, the Lakers avoided being plagued with Mark Jackson, or Doc Rivers. I get it, both men have had success in their coaching stints. However, this position simply doesn’t seem like the right fit for either coach.

Mark Jackson will eventually land another head coaching job in the NBA. That I am sure. However, this hire needed to be a young, up and coming type hire that injected some juice into the fanbase. Judging by the reactions on social media, I’d say mission accomplished on that end.

Making the Big 3 Work

According to Bill Oram of The Athletic, Ham “blew away” the Lakers brass with his understanding of X’s and O’s basketball. This is very welcomed news to any Lakers fan. Why? Well, I’ll tell you.

Unfortunately, Lakers fans may have to come to grips with the fact that Russell Westbrook will be in the starting lineup come opening night for the Lakers. Having a coach that understands X’s and O’s will be extremely beneficial to the team as he will be given the tase to maximize Westbrook next year. Also, let’s not forget. You have LeBron James, and Anthony Davis as well.

James continued to show that he can be an impactful player as he averaged 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in 56 games this year. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists per game in 40 games played. It should go without saying that Ham MUST develop a system to maximize his top 3 players in his offense next year.

The Future

Darvin Ham will be tasked with not only making The Big 3 of AD, LeBron, and Westbrook work, he will also be tasked with navigating the Los Angeles Lakers in the future as well. According to Woj, he was given a 4 year deal. The Lakers have been very careful to committing to players, and coaches, longterm and past the LeBron Era.

As of now, LeBron has not signed an extension. Therefore, the last year of his 4-year contract that he signed in 2018 expires this year. Questions remain about whether he will be back beyond this season. Westbrook is currently on an expiring contract, and it’s hard to believe that if the Lakers cannot trade him this year, that they work to bring him back.

As for AD, he is clearly the future of the Lakers. Building around him should be a massive priority for Ham and the Lakers front office. It’s going to be a long road ahead for Ham. But if his accolades prove to be true, it seems the Lakers may have hit a home run with this hire as they hope to go back to the NBA Finals next year.
