With the 2022 MLB season well underway, some of the usual names are putting on quite the show. Aaron Judge has led the Yankees to the best record in baseball, Mookie Betts looks like his former MVP self, and Pete Alonso put on quite the show in Los Angeles this weekend. As a result, fans are already excited to see another Pete Alonso Home Run Derby!

The Long Ball Show in LA

For this season, MLB announced that the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game will be played at the famed Dodgers’ Stadium at Chavez Ravine. Meanwhile, perhaps no stadium in baseball has been more kind to Pete Alonso than Dodgers’ Stadium. This weekend, Alonso continued to terrorize Southern California as he swatted three more home runs, bringing his total at Dodgers Stadium to 7 long balls in only 12 games.

Due to Alonso’s success in LA, fans and the media are clamoring for another Pete Alonso Home Run Derby. When asked after the game, Alonso jokingly said that the only thing he was waiting on was an official invite.

Alonso’s Home Run Derby Success

Since his rookie season in 2019, Pete Alonso has been a very familiar face at the derby. Starting in his famous rookie season, Alonso beat fellow youngster Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in a thrilling final that ended 23-22 in Alonso’s favor.

After the derby was canceled in the Covid shortened 2020, the second round of the Alonso Home Run Derby occurred during last year’s mid-year festivities. Defending his crown, Alonso again put on quite the show this time beating the Orioles’ Trey Mancini. Just like in 2019, Alonso won another thrilling final that again ended with Alonso winning 23-22.

While it remains to be seen if Pete Alonso will participate in this season’s derby, he has the chance to become only the second player, after Ken Griffey Jr., in MLB history to win the derby 3 times and the first to win it 3 times in a row.

With the Mets off to a terrific start and Alonso tied for the National League lead with 16 home runs on the season, the defending champ is surely in line to receive an invite. Hopefully, fans will get to see Alonso at the derby again this season!
