Fan favorite David Onama has already proved his worth to the UFC as he has earned a new four-fight UFC contract despite being in the promotion for less than a year. He is currently riding a two-fight win streak coming off impressive finishes over Gabriel Benetiz and Garret Armfield. Most of David Onama’s fights have come in at short notice, but he has still risen to the occasion. David Onama is scheduled to take on former M-1 Featherweight Champ Nate Landwehr at UFC San Diego.
Onama and Landwehr were originally supposed to fight in March of this year at UFC Columbus. Nate Landwehr was originally scheduled to fight Russian Zubaira Tukhugov at UFC Vegas 59. However, that fight fell through. This allowed David Onama to step in on short notice yet again. He has clearly gotten in the good graces of Dana White. If Onama can get another finish he will certainly be in line for a step up in competition, as well as a larger UFC contract.
David Onama VS Nate Landwehr Breakdown
Onama is coming in as the favorite coming into the fight. He is a high-volume striker that is always looking for a finish. He boasts a 100% finish rate. Landwehr is a striker that has great takedown defense. He is comfortable on his feet and like Onama throws a large number of strikes. Landwehr is coming off a win over Ľudovít Klein. He is currently 2-2 in the UFC with his other win coming over UFC veteran Darren Elkins. Onama will have both the height and reach advantage. Landwehr"s 2 losses in the UFC have come from knockout, so Onama will be looking to land big powerful strikes. Both guys are willing to eat shots. Expect this fight to play out on the feet with a knockout finish being possible. This fight is very likely to win someone a performance bonus or fight of the night.
The fact that the UFC decided to rebook his fight months down the line shows how they expect fireworks. This fight is also going to open the main card. There is going to be a big buzz in the arena. Onama has yet to fight outside of the Apex under the UFC banner. Landwehr has not fought outside the Apex since 2020. Both guys will be excited about the crowd. This could lead to both being willing to take more chances as they want to put on a show.
What Could Be Next for David Onama and his UFC Contract?
If David Onama was to take care of business and is able to secure another short-notice win via finish the UFC will likely reward him with a step up. Lerone Murphy, Charles Jourdain, Alex Caceres, Darren Elkins, and Billy Quarantillo are all possible future opponents for Onama to help him rise closer to the rankings.
If David Onama were to lose they may want to slow him down and build up his confidence. He is a fun fighter to watch so the UFC would like to protect their investment. Seungwoo Choi, Makwan Amirkhani, and Darrick Minner all pose tough but winnable challenges for Onama.
No matter what happens David Onama"s new deal solidifies him as a prospect that the UFC wants to build. He will be fighting in the UFC in the near future. If he is able to win fights while on his new deal expect the twenty-eight-year-old to be in the UFC for a while. He is an exciting fighter with high potential. He now has the UFC contract to match.
