Real Madrid Beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to Win Super Cup

The UEFA Super Cup the annual game between the Champions League winners and the Europa League winners featured European giants Real Madrid and German side Eintracht Frankfurt. Real Madrid was able to win their 4th trophy of 2022 after winning 2-0. It was a free-flowing game where Real Madrid was able to take over and control the match throughout the 90 minutes. Frankfurt tried to slow down Real Madrid’s transition attack by slowing them down and committing tactical fouls. Real Madrid did not let this stop them as they were able to convert on a set piece.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid ended up the match with 58% possession of the ball. They went into the half with 64% of the ball. In the first half, they seemed content with keeping possession of the ball slowing down the temp of the game, and probing around to find a hole in the defense.

The first goal in the Super Cup came in the 37th minute off a corner. Kroos whipped in the corner which found the head of Benzema. Benzema did well to flick the ball to Casemiro who was standing at the near post. Casemiro drew the reaction of the entire back line and Trapp. This left Alaba wide open with a tap-in. Casemiro was able to head the ball to Alaba who was able to put it in the back of the net. In the second half, Real Madrid was more lively and more dangerous in transition.

In the 65th minute, Real Madrid"s star duo reunited again. Vinicius found an open Benzema just outside of the box. Benzema hit it hard but at Trapp. Trapp was able to get a piece of it but the pace on the ball was too much and the ball ended up in the back of the net. With the game in hand, Carlo Ancelotti was able to hand Aurelien Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger their debuts.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Oliver Glasner decided to deploy a more conservative system. Frankfurt came out playing 5 at the back. In the first half, they wanted to keep a lot of numbers behind the ball and stifle Real Madrid"s attack. Frankfurt actually started off the game with the better chances. Kamada had a great clear-cut chance early that was saved by Courtois.

After the Alaba goal, Frankfurt went into halftime needing to adjust. They came out in the second half looking to attack. This left them more open in the back and allowed Real Madrid to score their second and effectively put the game on ice. Frankfurt did not get the result they wanted but they had a number of encouraging performances. Christopher Lenz, Daichi Kamada, Ansgar Knauff, and Djibril Sow all had very strong performances.

Man of the Super Cup

Toni Kroos was the man of the match in the Super Cup. He proved that he still has a lot left in the tank. He did a great job of controlling the tempo of the game. He was able to come back to the ball and help progress the attack. His distribution was excellent. His passes were creating a ton of trouble for Frankfurt. He was creating chances with his direct passing and his crosses.

He was unlucky to not add an assist to his stat line. Kroos was not only a force on the attack but he was very good on the defensive side of the ball as well. He did a good job of pressuring the ball and winning the ball back. He also recovered the ball back 9 times. He was also strong in 1 on 1 situations as he won 5 ground duels. If Kroos can play like this the rest of the season Real Madrid will be one of the favorites to win the Champions League.
