Interview with Alexandr Romanov Ahead of UFC 278

The UFC heads to Salt Lake City this Saturday for PPV action as Kamaru Usman looks to defend his Welterweight strap against Leon Edwards. In the featured prelim, undefeated Heavyweight Alexandr Romanov will be faced with the toughest test of his career as he takes on Marcin Tybura. I had the pleasure of speaking with Romanov ahead of his fight and here were his responses.

Fight Preview: Alexandr Romanov vs. Marcin Tybura

Marcin Tybura (22-7 overall, 9-6 in the UFC) is no easy match for any heavyweight, having been amongst the top 15 since 2017. After a 4-0 year in 2020, Tybura stumbled last year in a loss to Alexander Volkov but is looking to rebound against Romanov. At 36 years old, Tybura has proven he still has some fight left in the tank but needs to string wins together if he wants to get a title shot. A grappler, Tybura is able to use his heavy pressure mixed with solid ground-and-pound to put away his opponents and will look to do the same on Saturday.

Alexandr Romanov (16-0 overall, 5-0 in the UFC) is one of the scariest prospects in the UFC, highlighted by his undefeated record. “King Kong” has incredible wrestling blended with nasty ground-and-pound that makes him a perennial title contender at Heavyweight. However, the only knock on Romanov has been his strength of schedule as Marcin Tybura presents far and away the toughest challenge of his career. Coming in as a -310 favorite, Romanov will be out to prove that he’s ready for the challenge.

Interview with Alexandr Romanov

Danny Podolsky: How did this fight with Marcin Tybura come together and how has training been going?

Alexandr Romanov: Thank God, the training went very well, we had a strict schedule and kept the discipline during this period! This is all about a good alimentary diet, training on time and qualitative sleep!

Podolsky: Is there any added pressure heading into this fight knowing that you are still undefeated?

Romanov: There is absolutely no pressure because that is only a number for me!

I just keep doing my job, that’s all!

Podolsky: You’re a heavy favorite for this fight, does that change your mindset at all?

Romanov: I never pay attention to the predictions of the bookmakers, the fight is happening in real-time and it’s impossible to predict the ending or what might happen during the interaction!

Podolsky: Are you feeling invincible seeing as though you haven’t lost and have shown few weaknesses as a fighter?

Romanov: No, that doesn’t change my attitude at all. I have always been working hard for what I want and I keep doing that. I would say that this is just the result of my perseverance and discipline! I just love what I do in life!

Podolsky: What gives you the advantage in this fight over Tybura?

Romanov: I’ve always wanted the victory and this fight is no different!

Podolsky: What are your goals for the end of 2022?

Romanov: If everything goes well, with the help of God, I would be very glad to show up in another fight by the end of this year!

Podolsky: How many more fights do you think you are away from fighting for a title?

Romanov: I think that I am 2 or 3 fights away from the fight for the title.

Podolsky: What is your official prediction for this fight?

Romanov: My only prediction for this fight is that I am set just for the win! This is the main goal and also to enjoy the time in the octagon, that would be another beautiful experience, for sure!
