The Philadelphia Eagles are set to take the field on the road in Detroit for Week 1 of the 2022-2023 NFL season against the Lions on September 11th at 1:00 pm. The last meeting between these two franchises took place on Halloween last year, very fitting as it was a horrifying day to be a Lions fan. Philadelphia steamrolled Detroit with a final score of 44-6. I believe there will be a similar outcome to be had on the opening Sunday of the NFL season. Eagles GM, Howie Roseman made it a priority this past offseason to better his team, and he did exactly that. Roseman completely revamped both sides of the ball for the Eagles adding star players to the offensive and defensive units. In addition to new players, the young coaching staff in Philly is now entering their sophomore season and have a better grasp of their identity as a team, staff, and the system in which they operate in.
All Eyes on AJ Brown
All the talk surrounding the Eagles’ offseason moves has mostly been focused on the signing of Pro Bowl receiver AJ Brown. The former Titan has won over the love of the city quickly and easily with his attitude towards playing in Philly and the love he has shown towards the city and fans in general. Brown was sporting a throwback Allen Iverson jersey headed into the final preseason game for the Eagles against the Dolphins.
With all the hype surrounding the star-studded wideout, Eagles fan are expecting a monster debut game in midnight green from Brown. I am predicting Brown will absolutely hit the gridiron running and dominate the field in Detroit, recording at least 100 yards and 1 touchdown. He will be playing with a chip on his shoulder after the offseason drama surrounding the disgruntled relationship between Brown and his former team, the Tennessee Titans.
Heavier Focus on Passing
During the 2021-2022 NFL season the Eagles led the league in rushing. Head Coach Nick Sirianni relied heavily upon his stable of running backs and extremely successful offensive line when his offense took the field. While there is no doubt that the Eagles will continue to pummel teams with a hard running attack, the team will also look to utilize the passing game more with the added talent.
Now entering his sophomore season, Devonta Smith, will also look to hit the ground running in Detroit. Last year, Smith did not have the best game against the Lions, he recorded 1 catch for 15 yards on 3 targets with 0 scores. The “Slim Reaper” will most definitely look to up those numbers during the upcoming road trip to the motor city.
Relentless Defense from the Birds
In conjunction with the loaded rushing and passing attack, the Eagles’ defensive unit will also look to make statements in the season opener. The entire defensive roster for the birds received a complete facelift with the additions of Haason Reddick, Kyzir White, James Bradberry, Jordan Davis, and Nakobe Dean. The Eagles defense is nothing short of scary heading into this season. Pass rushing will be highlighted by Reddick, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham with Josh Sweat and Jordan Davis being added to the mix nothing is off the table for this Philadelphia defensive line. The secondary for the defense will also be another problem for the Lions, Darius Slay, James Bradberry, and Kyzir White will terrorize receivers and tight ends in this opening game and the season.
Based on last year’s game I believe it will be a similar outcome but the Lions will break double digits on the scoreboard. Detroit drafted DE Aidan Hutchinson and WR Jameson Williams during the 2022 NFL draft, these two players will make a huge difference for the Lions this year. Final score prediction: Eagles 41 – Lions 10.
