Twitter reacts as Virgil Van Djik gets destroyed by Ivan Perisic in classic Tottenham thriller.

Liverpool powerhouse defender, Virgil Van Djik has become the butt of many jokes, being heavily trolled, dissed and roasted by opponents and enemies after he got destroyed by Ivan Perisic in Liverpool thrilling 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.

What happened to Virgil Van Djik? The backstory.

The Reds hosted Tottenham at the Anfield on Sunday in an all-too important, crucial and nail-biting encounter. Both sides are striving to make the Champions League next season after faltering somewhere along the line during this campaign.

Spurs have been worse off than the Reds of recent as the sacking of Antonio Conte has done almost practically nothing to better the situation of the club who have suffered three defeats and a draw in the past four Premier League games(including the 4-3 loss to Liverpool)

Both sides came into the game, really needing a win and that proved effective in setting up the perfect atomsphere for a classic encounter. Liverpol had gone 3-0 up through Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah inside fifteen minutes.

Van Djik"s situation

But the visitors pulled one back just a couple of minutes from halftime. Oliver Skipp played a pass out wide into Ivan Perisic"s path on the left wing through the opposition midline. Virgil Van Djik went for the ball, sprinting towards it. Probably knowing, Perisic was going to beat him to it, the centre-back chose to guard against Perisic approaching with some momentum. The Tottenham winger cut back in and as Van Djik tried to match the brakes, Perisic had him exacerbate into a slip, almost turning over on his back and eventually sitting hard on the grass. With one man down, Perisic, in the Liverpool box, made the cross, sailing over Andy Robertsen and a back tracking Fabinho to Harry Kane who simply smashed home a right-footed volley past an hopeless Alison.

Tottenham further equalised courtesy of goals from Son and Richarlison even though Liverpool netted a late winner via Diogo Jota. But that infamous moment was a key highlight of the match, one that may never be forgotten for as long as the internet lives just like the Dutchman"s slip against Hwang Hee-Chan in the Champions League group-stages almost four years back.

Even though Liverpool got the win, the defender suffered an horrendous, calamitous evening on home soil and would remain the subject of comical discussion for a while. Twitter users took to social media to roast the centre-back as many posts and memes emerged based on the incident.

Even ESPN couldn"t hide their reaction to the incident:

Liverpool"s late winner sees them clinch three points to move up to 56 points in 33 games. Champions League football looks rather unrealistic for The Reds next season as they are seven points behind Manchester United despite The Red Devils having a game in hand. Given the premises of their condition, the club would must likely miss out on top-tier European football for the first time in seven seasons, playing in the Europa League for the first time since 2015/16.
