Phoenix Suns to Possibly Waive Chris Paul

The Phoenix Suns and veteran Point Guard- Chris Paul have had multiple conversations about the point guard’s future with the Suns.

Chris Paul's Future Up in the Air

There has been no concise or clear confirmation on Chris Paul’s future in Phoenix, as Bleacher Report and NBA Insider for TNT- Chris Haynes have reported that the Phoenix Suns have notified Paul that he will be waived. Haynes followed up the news by tweeting, “Chris Paul plans to play for several more years and is eager to help a team contend for a championship, sources say.” However, ESPN reported the Suns are exploring multiple options. Per Adrian Wojnarowski, Senior NBA Insider for ESPN, “Phoenix Suns ownership and executives had a series of conversations with Chris Paul and his representatives on the All-Star point guard’s future with the franchise Wednesday, including the possibility that he could be waived by the NBA’s June 28 guarantee date on his contract, sources told ESPN.”

It’s been rumored that the Suns would explore possibly trading Paul and center- Deandre Ayton in recent days. It should be noted that there are multiple situations regarding his contract in the air at the moment. The Suns will want to make their decision before June 28th, as on that date, his partially-guaranteed contract will become fully guaranteed. Only $15.8 million of his $30.8 million for the 2023-24 season is guaranteed if he’s waived. If the team were to waive Paul and Paul was to clear waivers, then he could resign with the Suns at a discount lower than the $30.8 million, it’s a bit of a gamble if you will as the Los Angeles Lakers and close friend to Paul- LeBron James are currently front runners in the race for Paul if he is officially waived.

It’s understandable why the Suns are exploring options to keep the core of the team- Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Paul, and even Ayton while getting some of the salary trimmed on their star players or even trading/waiving one or two of them due to depth being one of their key issues in the post-season this year.

The Suns reached the Western Conference Semi-Finals this year opposite the Denver Nuggets. Paul (38 years old) played in the first two games but missed the last four of the series, the Nuggets defeated the Suns (4-2). The future Hall of Famer played 59 games this season and averaged 13.9 points, 8.9 assists, and 4.3 rebounds.
