Basketball Betting Odds Explained
Basketball lines and odds may be confusing for people new to the world of sports betting. It’s easy to drown in the sea of terms when making your picks, between spreads, over/under, futures, and more. But, we’ll keep you afloat so you can (fingers crossed!) win big on your basketball bets.
How do basketball betting odds work? Let’s get into it.
Spreads
Basketball spread betting refers to the number of points a team is expected to win or lose by in a game. The point spread is a way to level the playing field and make betting more interesting.
In basketball, the team expected to win is the favorite and is assigned a negative spread. The underdog team, on the other hand, is given a positive spread.
Let’s say the Milwaukee Bucks are playing the Detroit Pistons as they have done before and will do many more times. The spread could look like this:
Pistons +7.5
Bucks -7.5
The underdog will always have a plus sign (+) and the favorite will always be denoted by the minus sign (-).
If you take the Pistons, they will need to either lose by 7 points or less or win the game outright to cover the spread. If you take the Bucks, they will need to win by at least 7 points to cover.
Moneylines
Placing a moneyline wager on basketball means you are betting on the team you believe will come out victorious. Moneylines represent the odds of each team winning the game and are perfect for beginners looking to place their first wagers on college or NBA basketball odds.
Moneyline odds look like this:
Boston Celtics -130
Philadelphia 76ers +110
If you take the favored Celtics, you’d need to bet $130 to win $100. Conversely, if you choose the 76ers and wagered $100, you’d net $210 – a $110 profit plus the initial $100 you risked back.
Futures
Betting futures in basketball allows you to bet on events that have yet to take place. And no, you do not need a time machine. Although, if you have access to one, please let us know. We’d like to go back to the early 80s to see Michael Jordan play at the college level.
Futures can include wagers on:
- College basketball championship odds.
- College basketball position awards odds.
- NBA championship winner odds.
- NBA Coach of the Year odds.
- NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
- NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds.
- NBA draft odds.
Betting on futures requires a long-term investment and patience, as the outcome won’t be determined until a later date.
Futures odds look like so:
Connecticut +1100.
Duke +1300.
Arizona +1400.
Alabama +1500.
Louisiana State University +25000.
In this scenario, the odds of UConn winning is high since they are the reigning champs. If you bet $100 and the Huskies repeated their amazing 2023 championship-winning performance and won, you’d win $1100.
If you took on the long-shot Tigers and LSU was able to take top honors, a $100 bet would give you $25,000 and you’d get your original $100 back.
Props
Prop bets in basketball allow bettors to place wagers on smaller, more specific outcomes within a game, rather than the overall outcome. Because of this, prop betting requires a strong understanding of all players and teams, making it more suited to seasoned bettors.
For instance, in pro ball, you will find NBA basketball lines for the number of:
- Points
- Rebounds
- Assists
- Steals
- Threes
- Turnovers
- Blocks
Over/Under
Over/under basketball betting requires you to place a wager on the total number of points that will be scored by both teams in a game.
The sportsbook sets the number (aka the total or the over/under). Bettors can then place wagers on whether they think the score will be higher or lower than the projected total.
The over/under is set based on factors such as the teams involved, their playing style, and the game’s venue.
Here’s an example:
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Washington Huskies
o147.5 / u147.5
If you bet over, you want the total score to be more than 148. If you bet the under, you need the total score to be less than 147.
Basketball Odds Leagues
We at Overtime Heroics pride ourselves on the diverse selection of odds we carry, showcasing lines from across the world at basketball betting sites. This includes North American favorites like NBA playoff odds, March Madness odds, and global leagues like the EuroLeague.
NBA Odds
The NBA is the largest basketball league in the world, and with that, you’ll see a plethora of betting options and odds. You’ll be able to find futures, props, and the other betting styles we unpacked above.
For bettors looking to wager on unique futures, as we mentioned previously, you can find NBA draft and NBA Sixth Man of the Year odds as well as NBA Rookie of the Year odds. If coaches are your forte, you’ll even find NBA Coach of the Year odds.
NCAA Odds
As one of the more exciting college leagues to bet on, sportsbooks offer a variety of NCAA odds. Bettors can expect a full house of options including point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, props, and futures, especially on larger events, like March Madness.
EuroLeague Odds
The EuroLeague is Europe’s elite basketball league. The league itself has drawn a ton of international acclaim, even supplying the NBA with players such as Luka Dončić.
As one would expect from a league this size, bettors can easily place bets in different styles. This includes all the most popular options like spreads, props, and moneylines, but also plenty of future bets like the EuroLeague MVP award.
If you are looking to watch and bet on a different style of basketball at the highest level, this league is for you.
Liga ACB
Liga ACB is the top professional basketball league in Spain. Bettors can wager on their favorite betting styles such as spreads and props. The only downside is that the ACB doesn’t have many rare future bets such as sixth man of the year.
ACB betting requires a good understanding of the teams and players involved, as well as their playing styles and the league’s rules and regulations.
Lega Basket Serie A
The Italian Basketball League, commonly known as Lega A, is Italy’s top basketball league. Bettors can place a variety of wagers on Lega A games, including point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, and props.
Please keep in mind that basketball played abroad oftentimes isn’t the same as US basketball. European players are known for much more fundamentalist playing styles, with lower scores, and more physicality leading to lower point totals and stats overall.
