Undertaker Ready To Get Extreme
Arguably Vince McMahon’s greatest gimmick creation returned to WWE television this past Monday Night. The Undertaker made a surprise appearance to help Roman Reigns even the odds from a Shane McMahon/Drew McIntyre ambush. As you are aware, at the Extreme Rules PPV event on July 14 the aforementioned foursome are scheduled to have a match, likely with an extreme rules stipulation.
Some of you may be pondering the thought on why Undertaker made his unannounced return to TV now? It isn’t Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, or Summer Slam season. He isn’t a performer known for tables, kendo sticks, chairs, or any gimmick match other than an occasional casket match. The Undertaker does not strike me as someone who is there for the pay day, so we can cast that notion aside.
My take is this. The match at Super Showdown earlier this month vs Goldberg is not one that will be revered in wrestling lore. Perhaps he would like to remove that from our recent memory and follow it up with one that will. However, I feel the more plausible scenario is to get some more eyeballs on the product. Perhaps give the ratings a boost (which are at an all-time low). The Undertaker is one of the few remaining ties to the Attitude Era and someone who is familiar to the “casual” wrestling fan. I interact with people that are not religious followers to WWE programming, but on Tuesday morning I was approached by some of those folks saying “did you see Undertaker was on Raw last night?”
Whatever the reason for the decision behind his return we should be grateful to see one of the greatest performers in wrestling history. Who knows how many more matches he has left in the tank. Regardless, enjoy another “Last Ride” by the Phenom.
