Los Angeles Lakers: Free Agency Targets

The Los Angeles Lakers unloaded the contracts of three players to the Washington Wizards on Thursday. Those three players were Mo Wagner, Isaac Bonga, and Jemerrio Jones.

The deal makes the Anthony Davis trade to the New Orleans Pelicans a three-team trade. Davis has agreed to waive his $4 million trade bonus, and the Lakers now have $32 million in cap space to use in free agency, according to Adrian Wojnarowski, Zach Lowe, and Bobby Marks of ESPN.

NBA free agency starts on June 30; so who should the Lakers go after? Let’s take a look at the players the Lakers should go after in free agency.

Kawhi Leonard- Leonard is apparently on the top of the Lakers wish list. The Lakers are to expected to meet with Leonard when free agency begins, according to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports. However, Kawhi will let the Toronto Raptors make the final pitch while he’s meeting with teams in Los Angeles, according to Wojnarowski.

Last season, Leonard averaged 26.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He helped the Raptors win their first NBA championship, and was named NBA Finals MVP for the second time in his career. Despite winning a title with the Raptors, he is expected to become a free agent and would be a good fit for the Lakers.

Kyrie Irving- According to Marc Stein of the the New York Times, Irving is a target for the Lakers. This, despite the fact that it appears that he’s going to the Brooklyn Nets, where Kevin Durant could also end up going.

Irving would be a good fit for the Lakers. He has said that he is open to reuniting with LeBron James.

Jimmy Butler- Butler has interest in the Lakers, according to Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report. He is open to accepting a deal that would be less than a max deal. Butler would be a good addition to the Lakers, but he’s not one of the Lakers top targets.

D’Angelo Russell- Russell is a restricted free agent, which means the Nets can match any offer he gets. He just had the best season of his career. We don’t know if he wants to stay with the Nets or go somewhere else.

Writer Prediction: The Lakers will sign Leonard and another player from this list or J.R. Smith, who wouldn’t mind reuniting with LeBron.
