Philadelphia 76ers: The New Champs of the East?

Heading into free agency, the Philadelphia 76ers didn’t seem to have much room for improvement. The main concerns for them were to re-sign Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris. They got one of those done by re-signing Harris to a max deal, and traded Butler to the Miami Heat for Josh Richardson. After keeping money that would’ve been used on Butler, the Sixers went on to sign PF/C Al Horford to a four year deal. Overall, the two new additions to the team make them even better and can realistically put them over the top.

Possible Starting Lineup

  • Ben Simmons
  • Josh Richardson
  • Tobias Harris
  • Al Horford
  • Joel Embiid

How will it all fit?

The size and length of this team is crazy. The smallest player in the starting lineup is Josh Richardson, who is 6′ 6″. By adding Richardson and Horford, two amazing defensive players, this Sixers team could become one of the best defensive teams in the past decade. The main concern for them is still outside shooting, but Richardson also comes with an above average three-point shot.

With Butler gone, Harris can now step up and be the main outside shooter on the team. This is most likely the main reason why the team gave him the max deal. The biggest player concern is Ben Simmons and his jump shot. I doubt it has progressed over the off-season so far, but maybe if he can focus on driving to the paint and controlling the floor, all the different scoring options on the team can be more efficient.

Predictions: 56-26, 2 seed

Although the Eastern Conference gained lots of new stars this offseason, the next year is open for any team. The Nets will not have KD and the Celtics lost Al Horford and downgraded point guards to Kemba Walker. With this new Sixers team, it’s going to be all about relieving pressure from the young stars. Simmons will get help from Richardson guarding the other team’s star guard, and Horford will help Embiid with defense in the paint. If they can add two decent bench players to go with their draft picks, they will have the most solid overall team in the league.

Stat Predictions: (per game)

Ben Simmons: 17 PTS, 8 AST, 7 REB

Josh Richardson: 14 PTS, 3 AST, 5 REB

Tobias Harris: 19 PTS, 2 AST, 6 REB

Al Horford: 12 PTS, 5 AST, 7 REB

Joel Embiid: 24 PTS, 2 AST, 10 REB

Final Thought

This team will be good, everyone knows that. The question is how good. I expect them to be the best defensive team in the league and one of the best rebounding teams. The size and length of this team is freaky and the play-making ability is everywhere on the court. They were so close last year, and they have improved so far this year. This team should be loads of fun to watch this season.
