Clippers to land Kawhi Leonard and Paul George
The final star of this 2019 free agency has made his decision! As of 1:54 A.M. EST, Kawhi Leonard has verbally agreed to a 4 year, $142 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. This agreement came after much speculation as to where the recent Finals MVP would be signing to this offseason. Teams that had been in talks of signing Leonard included the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, and his former team, the Toronto Raptors.
The current NBA champion averaged 26.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG, and 3.3 APG last season as well as getting voted to the All-NBA 2nd Team, All-Defensive 2nd Team, and his 3rd All-Star appearance.//embed.sendtonews.com/player2/embedcode.php?fk=rkretmeW&cid=9141&SIZE=400&floatwidth=400
Fans have been clamoring left and right about where Kawhi would be going, even starting the hashtag “#KawhiWatch” in order to track the superstar’s latest meetings with various teams. At one point, there were even helicopters following Leonard around as he went from meeting to meeting. However, as Woj reported, the Clippers had been Kawhi’s number one target throughout this offseason, but he wouldn’t come without an extra piece.
In order to get Kawhi, he also requested that the Clippers go after another star. The Clippers succeeded in that after also securing a trade to acquire Paul George from the Oklahoma City Thunder. The trade has been reported as follows:
The Clippers get:
- Paul George
The Thunder get:
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
- Danilo Galllinari
- 3 Clippers first-round picks (2022, 2024, 2026)
- 2 first-round picks from the Heat (2021, 2023)
- 2 first-round pick swaps (2023, 2025)
- $10.4 million trade exception
