Patriots Preseason Week 2 Winners and Losers

As we reach the halfway point of the preseason we see who will make the roster and who will be cut. These are my top winners and losers from week two of the Patriots preseason.

Patriots Winners

Jarret Stidham

With Jarret Stidham being drafted with the 31st pick in the fourth round of the 2019 draft, his value is above most others on the roster. Jining the squad through the draft put him in a position to compete for the back-up role. In the preseason game against the Titans Stidham through for one touchdown, on 14/19 completed passes, and for 193 receiving yard. Hoyer looked off tonight so if this pattern of events keeps happening Stidham will be the backup quarterback this season. He threw for an almost perfect 123.4 passer rating. Stidham helped space the field and open up holes for Damien Harris

Damien Harris

Damien Harris was drafted with the 24th pick in the 3rd round of the 2019 NFL draft. Harris is coming into an offense that splits up the running back reps evenly. With the Patriots drafting Sony Michel last season Harris has to prove he can be a consistent option so he can be the third-string running back. In the game against the Titans, Harris rushed for 80 yards over 14 carries. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry against the Titans. Harris showed his explosiveness when he ran for a 20-yard game but he was just a couple yards short of the endzone. On the Patriots there are many future role players and stars.

Chase Winovich

Chase Winovich was drafted with the 14th pick in the third round of the 2019 draft. The defense is growing and adding more talent each season such as Chase Winovich. He is a linebacker and a defensive end just like Rob Ninkovich who retired a couple of years ago. In the game against the Lions Winovich racked up six tackles, one sack, and two tackles for loss. Winovich is 24 years olds so he has a lot of experience as a football player. If Winovich can stay on this roll he can earn a role on the roster.

Losers

Brian Hoyer

After having a decent first preseason game against the Lions he had an underwhelming game against the Titans. Brian Hoyer has been a backup quarterback for most of his career, but after this pre-season, it might not be with the Patriots. In the game against the Titans Hoyer through for 55 yards throwing 6 out of 8 passes. Hoyer had a 53.6 quarterback percentage this past game and he threw one interception. WIth Jarret Stidham having an amazing two games Stidham may take the back up a roll from Hoyer. Lots of other players have been unsuccessful this preseason as well.

Dontrelle Inman

Dontrelle Inman was picked up this offseason but has yet to prove himself as a lock on the Patriots. Inman is a red zone receiver since he locks in at 6”3 last season. Inman has no place on the roster after Josh Gordon was brought back to the team. In the game against the Titans Inman only received one reception for 17 yards. This also proves he’s a loser because he was just cut by the Patriots on August 18th.

Editor note: Inman was released on Sunday, August 18th, in order to create room for Josh Gordon.

Braxton Berrios

Braxton Berrios was drafted with the 16th pick in the sixth round by the New England Patriots in 2018. Last season Berrios was on injured reserve the whole year. Berrios had a terrible game receiving zero receptions, and he only had one target. Berrios was supposed to be the next Julian Edelman, but fans are beginning to like Jakobi Meyers even more. If Berrios doesn’t step his game up he may never make the Patriots roster.
