Why Dwight Howard is the best choice for Lakers

After DeMarcus Cousins suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, the Los Angeles Lakers need a center. Dwight Howard of the Memphis Grizzlies is someone that the Lakers are looking at to fill the vacancy.

Laker’s Interest

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Grizzlies have given the Lakers permission to talk to Howard. A Superman return to the Lakers looks extremely likely as the Grizzlies have expressed interested in waiving Howard.

The Lakers interest in Howard is just “due diligence” at this time, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. The Lakers are also working out big men Joakim Noah and Mo Speights according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Dwight Fits?

Should the Lakers pursue a Howard return? Yes; they should get him because he is the best available option giving them depth at center next to Javale McGhee.

Howard didn’t play much last season due to injuries which cause him to have surgery. However he averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, and 1.3 assists two seasons ago. He might not be at his best, but he’s still good and valuable.

Howard’s familiarity with LA, their management and the style of play makes him a good candidate. In Howards one season in LA the Lakers went 45-37 and made the playoffs. However they were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round.

Howard Loves LA

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I do love L.A.,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “Staples Center is going to be rocking this season. When I played there it was rocking every night. The atmosphere is crazy, not just for the Lakers but the Clippers too. I just think all the hard work they’ve put in is paying off now. They’ve always been viewed as the Lakers’ little brother, but they decided to stand out and be different and you have to thank guys like Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and Chris Paul for laying the foundation for this team, and then what Doc [Rivers] has done has been great. This is just all that hard work paying off.”

Howard can help the Lakers win now. Pairing the big man with AD in the back court gives the Lakers size and experience. Being the best fit, the Lakers would be fools not to pursue Superman. Will Los Angeles allow Dwight to put the cape back on.
