OTH Roundtable: Jim Benning Extension

NHL.com

Yesterday, Canucks’ general manager Jim Benning was re-signed to a three-year extension. He was going into the final year of his current contract. In the five years Benning has been at the helm, the team has only made the playoffs once. However, he has drafted well building a team that now boasts the likes of Calder trophy winner Elias Pettersson, 2018 finalist Brock Boeser and 2020 contender Quinn Hughes.

In the first edition of the OTH roundtable, we tackle this very subject. Below are some of our thoughts!

The Vancouver Canucks have proved their trust to Jim Benning by extending him. He has led the rebuild for the last several years and has, in my opinion, done a fantastic job. Sure he has made his mistakes, but then again who doesn’t. You cannot blame Benning for the team’s losing record, rebuilds will do that. I think this clears up any uncertainties that the team faces.

Starting his tenure in the 2014-15 season, Benning is known for his draft pick selections. However, the Canucks fanbase is known to have a split opinion on him. The Canucks only made the playoffs once under Jim Benning in the 2014-15 season. Benning has drafted tremendous players such as Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser, or Elias Pettersson. His other draft picks have been a hit or miss, much like the team’s performances under him.

Jim Benning’s extension is a bit shocking, but I wouldn’t call it a surprise. He has been the Canucks’ general manager for five years now. If anyone knows the direction of this team, it’s Benning, something that seemed to be made clear when former team president Trevor Linden left the organization. The GM has had his good moments and his bad. The good? Drafting guys like Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, and Quinn Hughes. After all, those aren’t picks that were obvious selections, but it seems they’ve all worked out pretty well.

The problem is that the bad isn’t hard to find. Was his worst move signing Loui Eriksson? Drafting guys like Jake Virtanen and Olli Juolevi above stars? Maybe it’s a more recent move, like trading away their 1st rounder for J.T. Miller. Personally, I don’t think Benning is a terrible GM. I think the problem is that his questionable history means the Canucks should’ve waited to see how well they’d do this season, rather than jumping ahead of this early.

The Benning extension was something that needed to be done. If you consider what he has done it was well warranted.  He took the Canucks roster and added tons of talent.  He added Tyler Motte two years ago.  This year he added Jamie Benn‘s brother, Jordie Benn.
