Oakland Athletics: The Profile of Alex Pantuso

The Oakland Athletics most underrated prospect is right handed pitcher, Alex Pantuso. He played his college career at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. He is currently in the Oakland farm system with the Class-A affiliate, Vermont Lake Monsters.

College Days

Pantuso was used as a starter for the majority of his tenure at the Rock. In fact, he made 39 starts out of 43 college appearances. He is a major strikeout guy and that played up in college. He averaged 11.4 strikeouts per 9 innings during his college days. The right hander pitched 211.2 innings with 267 strikeouts. Pantuso played all four years of college at Slippery Rock to be drafted to the Oakland Athletics.

Welcome To the Oakland Organization

The Athletics made the decision of drafting him in the 38th round of the 2018 MLB Draft. This low draft choice has paid off so far. Pantuso started his career last summer with the AZL Gold Athletics as a reliever. In 24.1 innings of relief he struck out 35 on a decent ERA of 3.33. This season he went on to be even more dominant and show even more potential.

Moving Up the Ranks

Pantuso did indeed start the season with the AZL Gold Athletics team again in 2019. The 23 year old sure looked great on the mound too. To start the year he had a measly 2.33 ERA in 19.1 innings of relief and fanned 35 batters. He was then called up to the Class-A Vermont Lake Monsters. He has shown he can adapt to higher level of competition. This year he only pitched 4.0 innings but struck out 8 batters. His ERA of 4.50 doesn’t really tell the whole story in such a small sampling. He is still showcasing that swing and miss stuff, even at a higher level.

Looking To Next Year

Usually relievers can move through the system abruptly. Alex Pantuso could see 2020 be a huge year for him. He does need to figure out the command, as it has been shaky his entire career. Though if he keeps the great strikeouts up and the great pitching, he should rise through the ranks next year. He is definitely my favorite prospect of the Oakland Athletics. It’s great to see all of his progression and add even more potential each year for him.
