Week 2 is in the books. The college football playoff watch for most of the contenders continued. We did have a few surprises though, let the eliminations begin!
Alabama (Win 62-10)- New Mexico St was the sacrificial lamb in Tuscaloosa this week. Jerry Jeudy launched his name into the Heisman talk.
Georgia (Win 63-17)- Murray St took their payday and beating. Arkansas St will take theirs next week. Notre Dame between the hedges in two weeks will be their first test.
LSU (Win 45-38)- Went on the road and got a top 10 win against a game Texas squad. Joe Burrow and company shredded Texas and gives LSU an O that they haven’t had in a long while. The secondary for the Tigers has to be a real concern though. Florida on October 10th is their next stumbling block.
Auburn (Win 24-6)- A sluggish performance against Tulane. They have the Oregon win in their back pocket and a championship caliber defense, so the journey continues.
Florida (Win 45-0)- Tennessee-Martin got a payday and a beat down, but losing Toney could be a big blow to the offense. Florida should be 5-0 with games against Kentucky, Tennessee, and Towson before a matchup against Auburn.
Texas A&M- OUT– I know an L to the defending national champions in their house shouldn’t have them out, but the schedule is just too daunting.
Ohio St. (Win 42-0)- handled business against a good Cincinnati team.
Michigan (Win 24-21)- struggle city against Army, but they survived and advance. They have some things to figure out before Wisconsin in two weeks.
Penn St. (Win 45-13)- Roar Lions Roar! Handled business against Buffalo after a slow start. Next up rival Pitt.
Michigan St. (Win 51-17)- they might be the best team in Michigan right now. No reason they shouldn’t be 5-0 before their meeting with Ohio St.
Wisconsin (Win 61-0)- Let’s give the Badgers some love! 110-0 combined scores the first two weeks. Pretender or Contender showdown in two weeks versus Michigan.
Iowa (Win 30-0)- Took care of Rutgers and have enough games against the contenders to be in the conversation. Battle for the Cy-Hawk trophy against Iowa St this week.
Oklahoma (Win 70-14)- The only thing separating them from a playoff spot are games with Texas and Bedlam against Oklahoma St. They are clearly the best team in the Big 12.
Texas (Loss 45-38)- a tough home loss to an SEC contender is nothing to hang the horns over. They still have Oklahoma on the schedule and maybe a rematch in the Big 12 title game.
Utah (Win 35-17)- It’s was a typical ho-hum Utah win against Northern Illinois. They got a matchup versus USC that might tell us more.
Oregon (Win 77-6)- The Duckies bounced back well at home. Just like Texas a lose to an SEC contender isn’t a death sentence. Run the table and they are in the conversation.
Washington- OUT- lose to Cal at home and wave bye-bye to the playoffs!
Clemson (Win 24-10)- A great out of conference win against the Aggies. Clemson is the only ACC hope and I don’t see anything in their path to the playoff.
Independent/Group of 5:
Notre Dame (Off)- Louisville didn’t start out pretty but the Irish made the adjustments and pulled away. Ian Book needs to get some confidence against New Mexico this week, cause a trip to Georgia looms in two weeks.
UCF (Win 48-14)- They have two power 5 teams in Stanford and Pitt the next two weeks. Win those and we can start the playoff talk.
Boise St. (Win 14-7)- Marshall is better than most think. Coming off a big win at Florida St. I’m going to say travel and letdown bit the Broncos, but survive and advance. BYU on October 19th is probably their next chance for an L.
Army-OUT- Valiant effort Cadets! But you let it slip through your fingers! For you to be in the talk, you had to win that one!
