No Surgery for David Njoku

Per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com David Njoku will not have wrist surgery. If Njoku had elected surgery, he would have missed the rest of the 2019 season. No surgery is good news for the Browns and Njoku. Choosing not to have the surgery will allow him the chance to return week 12 at the earliest. The talented tight end would be a significant addition down the stretch.

Njoku’s wrist was broken when Jets when cornerback Nate Hairston upended him on a high pass from Baker Mayfield. He also suffered a concussion on the play. Players on injured reserve are required to miss eight games which is why we must wait until Week 12 against the Miami Dolphins. He is more likely to see action week 13 against the Steelers.

Likely IR Candidates to Return

Christian Kirksey, Drew Stanton, Drew Forbes, and Njoku are all players the Browns could activate after eight games. The thing is only two players a year can come off IR after serving those eight games. Looking at the needs of the Browns and the fact Kirksey is likely done for the year. Stanton is around as a sounding board in the quarterback room, and the Browns trust young Garrett Gilbert as the backup for Baker Mayfield, so he is likely to miss the year. With the need on the offensive line and the chance to bring Njoku back, Drew Forbes and Njoku will likely be the candidates they hope to activate.

Weak Division

With the division looking like it could be up for grabs, Njoku not having surgery could provide a huge lift over the last five games of the year. During that stretch, the Browns will face the Steelers, Ravens, and Bengals(twice). Adding another weapon the caliber of Njoku could be the difference between winning the division or missing the playoffs depending on how the season goes before he is eligible to return. Currently, this division looks like it could be up for grabs, and any advantage could take it all.
