Kyle Lowry signs extension with Toronto Raptors

Kyle Lowry

Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry isn’t going anywhere. Lowry and the Raptors agreed to a one-year, $31 million contract extension on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal guaranteed Lowry $64 million over the next two years. That includesw the $33 milion left on his expiring contract. The Raptors front office had wanted to get an extension done for months. Lowry has said he wants to end his career as a Raptor. However he is still eligible to be traded.

“We are so appreciative of how Masai and Bobby handled every aspect of this negotiation,” Mark Bartelstein told Woj. Once again, they displayed how they look after their players in a first-class manner, especially someone like Kyle who they recognize has such a legacy with the franchise.”

Last season Lowry averaged 14.2 points and 8.7 assists. In the NBA Finals he averaged 16.2 points, four rebounds, and 7.2 assists as he helped the Raptors win the championship.

Impact of Kyle Lowry extension

The extension is a win-win for Lowry and the Raptors. Lowrly gets to play for the team he wants to be with. Meanwhile the Raptors get to keep one of their best players.

The biggest impact Lowry’s extension will have is on the Raptors future. While Lowry is signed, Marc Gasol, Fred VanVleet, and Serge Ibaka are in the final year of their contracts. Pascal Siakam will also be a free agent next summer, but is working on a contract extension, according to NBA.com.

There’s a good chance that the Raptor will lose some players after this season. With Lowry staying, the Raptors could go after big free agents in 2021.

The 2021 free agent class includes Giannis Antetokounmpo, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, and Bradley Beal among others. If the Raptors can get some big names in 2021, then Lowry and the players they get can lead the Raptors to multiple championships.

Kyle Lowry’s extension is a good thing because the Raptor can build for the future.
