Sam Darnold Cleared to Play Against Dallas Cowboys

The New York Jets are getting their quarterback back this week. Sam Darnold was medically cleared to play on Tuesday.

Darnold hasn’t played since week one due to dealing with mono. He will start Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. In an appearance on ESPN New York’s “The Michael Kay Show” on Monday, Darnold said that he was hoping he could play on Sunday.

“I feel good. Energy’s awesome,” Darnold said, per Eric Allen of the Jets website. “Just looking to play this week, but (have to) wait for the doctor’s orders tomorrow. I’m excited to hear the news, I have a feeling it’s going to be good news. I thought maybe it would come last week, but had to wait it out again. Hopefully this week it’s better news and I get to practice and get ready for a game on Sunday.”

Impact of Sam Darnold Return

The return of Darnold is good news for the Jets. The Jets are 0-4 and are having their worst start since 2003. Getting Darnold back will give the Jets a chance to win games and improve on offense.

The offense has been the Jets biggest problem. They currently rank last in the NFL in total offense(179.5 yards per game) and passing yards (113.5). Gang Green is 31st in the league in scoring (9.8 points). The Jets offense is also last in the league in yards per play and third-down efficiency.

Jets coach Adam Gase believes that having Darnold back will help the Jets offense be better.

“It’s probably more than just Sam getting out there — we’ve got a lot of other things to clean up — but Sam is able to hide things sometimes for us,” Gase said, per Rich Cimini of ESPN. “If we make a mistake, he covers it up. We just need to do a better job as a group, making sure we’re all on the same page.”

Sam Darnold is back. Now can he lead the Jets to their first win of the season?
