2020 NHL Draft: Hendrix Lapierre Scouting Report

Chicoutimi Sanguenéens star center Hendrix Lapierre made scouts stand up and take note of his outstanding performance at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup this past summer. He is expected to be an early selection at the 2020 NHL draft.

Scouting Report

Date of Birth: February 9, 2002

Place of Birth: Gatineau, QC

Position: Center

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 172 lbs

Shoots: Left

Draft year: 2020

Rankings: # 6 by HockeyProspect.com and # 14 by Future Considerations

Skating ( A )

Smooth and seemingly effortless best describe the skating of Lapierre. Although his top end speed isn’t extraordinary his shiftiness and overall mobility are. I would like to see him work on a more explosive start, which may come as he gets stronger.

Hockey IQ ( A )

Lapierre is an extremely skilled hockey player that sees the ice exceptionally well. His hockey sense and awareness of the situation are extremely high in all areas of the game.

Shooting ( C+ )

The majority of goals that Lapierre scores are from close range. His shot is not overly hard. However, his accuracy and release are reasonably good. He would have scored higher in this category, except it is a facet of his game that is scarcely utilized.

Size and physicality ( C )

At 5’11” tall and 172 lbs., Lapierre is not counted on for physicality

Defensive game ( B+ )

The hockey sense that Lapierre displays is also very evident in his defensive game. He works hard on priding himself as a complete 200-ft. player and is efficient at taking away passing lanes. His anticipation is likewise a strength in his defensive zone coverage.

Puck protection and skills ( B)

Like the majority of skilled players that are slightly undersized his strength in this aspect of his game comes from being elusive. His ability to dart in and out of traffic coupled with his stickhandling skills allow him to maintain the puck in the offensive zone. This creativity buys him the time to find unmarked teammates.

Playmaking ( A+ )

Without a doubt this is skill that defines him as a player. He is perhaps the best playmaker of all prospects eligible for the 2020 NHL draft. His vision and creativity along with soft hands are remarkable. Passing is always his first option.

Overview

Many highly skilled prospects are available for the 2020 NHL draft. Albeit, few with the playmaking skills displayed by Lapierre.
