Pro Call of Duty Becomes a Franchised League

With a new Call of Duty game just launching and seeing massive success with the Overwatch League. It’s no surprise that Activision decided to franchise the Call of Duty League. The newest title, Modern Warfare, will see it’s highest level pros compete in city based teams.

Furthermore, teams will host two home events in their respective city. Several teams will travel to one city to compete in a weekend long event. Activision also mentioned that “all teams will have the option to host additional events.” Not wanting to disappoint the amateur scene, Activision has pledged a prize pool of over $1 million to their Challenger Circuit. This will function as a path-to-pro league where those hoping to earn glory and advance into the COD League one day can shine.

Teams and Season Structure

For its inaugural season, the Call of Duty League will have twelve teams: Toronto Ultra, LA Optic, La Guerillas, New York Subliners, Dallas Empire, London Royal Ravens, Atlanta FaZe, Chicago Huntsmen*, Seattle Surge*, Minnesota Rokkr*, Paris Legion*, and Florida Mutineers*

Moreover, each team will consist of five players, coaches, and substitutes. These teams will be competing in a 28 week season split into two phases followed by a postseason. The top teams of each phase will qualify for the postseason. They will then compete in a double elimination playoff for a chance to play in the Call of Duty World Championship.

Additionally, Activision has announced the creation of their City Circuit, a chance for fans to compete and support their cities. They’ll be playing Modern Warfare’s 2v2 Gunfight mode for prizing and the opportunity to compete at its own championship which will be hosted at the COD World Championship.

The Call of Duty League does not have a finalized date for it’s opening events yet. But we can look forward to announcements soon with the league set to begin sometime in Spring 2020.

*These team names have not officially been confirmed yet.
