Pirates Make Flurry of Roster Moves

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that they have picked up the options for Starling Marte at $11.5 million and Chris Archer at $9 million.

Furthermore, the club reinstated Archer, reliever Nick Burdi, reliever Kyle Crick, right-hander Chad Kuhl, reliever Edgar Santana, starter Jameson Taillon and outfielders Jason Martin and Gregory Polanco from the 60-day IL.

They also outrighted right-handers James Marvel, Alex McRae and Yefry Ramírez and lefty Wei-Chung Wang off the roster. This leaves one roster-spot open on the 40-man roster.

Marte and Archer’s options being picked up are not the least-bit surprising. Marte was arguably the team’s best player last year. He slashed .295/.342/.503. In addition to setting a career-high in slugging percentage, Marte also set career-highs in home runs with 23 and RBIs with 82. He also had a 20-20 season. Marte stole 25 bags, which marks the seventh consecutive season he stole at least 20 bases. He has another club option for $12.5 million left on his contract.

As for Archer, while some may question his option being picked up given his injury-filled and dissappointing 2019 season. However, the right-hander is costing only $9 million and has a $11 million club-option for 2021. Archer’s 2019 season was a forgettable one as he finished with a 3-9 record, 5.13 ERA and just 143 strikeouts. The Pirates are hoping he can return to his Rays form when he had three consecutive 200 strikeout seasons.
