UFC Moscow team picks
UFC Moscow will take place at the CSKA Arena. The event will now be headlined by a three-round bout between Zabit Magomedshapirov (17-1) and Calvin Kattar (20-3). The main event is only three rounds because the bout was moved up to the main event late after Junior Dos Santos (21-6) dropped out of his fight against Alexander Volkov (30-7).
Zabit vs Kattar
Zabit vs Kattar is an exciting matchup between two of the top featherweight contenders. It will be an intriguing clash of striking styles, as the unorthodox Zabit will look to outmanoeuvre the orthodox boxing and kickboxing of Kattar.
Both fighters have wrestling backgrounds and fighting styles that complement their respective wrestling styles. Zabit’s fluidity allows him to change levels effectively when attempting takedowns. Whereas, Kattars orthodox style provides a solid base for snuffing any takedown attempts.
Zabit comes into the fight as a betting favourite, riding a 13-fight winning streak, compared to Kattar’s two-fight win streak.
The main danger for Zabit during this fight is his willingness to stand and trade in the pocket. Zabit’s main advantage is his fluidity, which is minimised whilst fighting in the pocket., whereas Kattar excels at fighting in close.
Volkov vs Hardy
MMA legend Junior Dos Santos. Although, after Dos Santos pulled out of the fight, Greg Hardy (5-1) stepped up on short notice to replace him. This resulted that the fight being moved down the card to the co-main event spot.
Volkov lost his last outing to Derrick Lewis, in a fight he was winning, via KO 4 minutes and 49 seconds into the third and final round. This showed both a lack of concentration and fight IQ on Volkov’s part.
Hardy’s last fight was called a no-contest after he bizarrely used an inhaler between rounds. Hardy seemed to empty his gas tank early and could struggle if the fight gets into the later rounds. His best chance is to land big shots early in order to put Volkov away.
