Note: This article has been updated to reflect multiple statements made by different parties.

Reports emerged Friday that Ottawa Senators defenseman Nikita Zaitsev had been accused to have abducted his children from his ex-wife. It came out on his ex-wife’s Instagram that he had come over to Russia to abduct their kids in order to not pay child support. There is a video, and it’s included below.

Zaitsev was granted a personal leave of absence away from the team on November 22nd, for him to go to Russia. Some have speculated that the leave of absence was used to abduct the children, as the timeline does line up.

Nikita Zaitsev was signed out of the KHL by the Toronto Maple Leafs. After a successful rookie campaign, was given a controversial seven-year contract, with an AAV of $4.5m. The contract, along with personal reasons, eventually had him shipped to Ottawa. He was packaged with Connor Brown and Michael Carcone, in exchange for Cody Ceci, Ben Harpur, Aaron Luchuk, and the Columbus Blue Jackets’ 2020 3rd round pick.

Zaitsev’s father posted on Instagram about the situation. A rough translation shows that he appears to say it’s not Zaitsev’s fault. It appears to say Zaitsev was barred by her from seeing his kids, and that the public should wait for the facts. However, this will be updated once we get a solid translation of the post as well.

It’s been passed around that the kids were mistreated beforehand, but those are just unsubstantiated rumours at this stage

The Ottawa Senators organization provided this statement:

More to come.

Update: Zaitsev’s agent tweeted a statement out earlier.

Dan Milstein here claims that the children are safe and that the accusations aren’t true. The Senators organization also stated that they’ve been told the kids are safe in Russia.
