With Christmas on the horizon and and the decade coming to a close, it is the perfect time to rank the best Canucks of the 2010’s. This is the Canucks Advent Calendar.
Each day until Christmas I will rank one player until we have the top 25 of the 2010’s. These Vancouver icons will be ranked on their statistics, impact on the city and overall play during their time with Vancouver. Rankings will be based on the player’s Vancouver tenure during the 2010’s only, prior seasons with the team will make little impact to the rankings.
18. Quinn Hughes (2019 – Present)
Statistics: 34 GP, 2 G, 25 A, 27 PTS
Similarly to the 19th ranked player on this list, Quinn Hughes has played less than half a season in Vancouver. In this 34 game span Quinn Hughes has exceeded all expectations that were placed on him when he was selected seventh overall in the 2018 Entry Draft. Quinn Hughes has simply mesmerized fans with his dizzying spin-moves and offensive prowess. As each NHL game passes for Hughes, he seems to take another step in a positive direction.
Hughes joined the Vancouver Canucks for the final five games of last season (2018-19). While on the main roster, Hughes showed early signs of stardom. The 19-year old put up 3 assists and got the fans excited to see him continue his NHL journey. From the early Hughes powerplays to his brief stint in overtime, everyone knew that they were witnessing the start of something special.
Fans were primed and ready to see how this offensive dynamo would do through a full season. Would he be too soft? Would he be a defensive liability? Was his offence sustainable? So far Hughes has answered all of those questions emphatically. Although we are only sitting at 30 games into it, Hughes has done everything right. The rookie defenceman currently sits at 24 points and has rejuvenated Vancouver’s powerplay unit.
Whenever he steps on the ice, Hughes instantly brings a lively presence along with him. His energy and offensive impact are essential to this young Vancouver roster looking to make a playoff push. Although we are less than half way through his first season, Hughes is currently on pace for to have the most points for a Canucks defenceman in a season. You heard that right. More points than ANY defenceman in Vancouver’s 50 year history. For that stat alone Hughes is deserving of the number 18 slot on this list.
I hope that you have enjoyed this installment of the Canucks Advent Calendar! Be sure to check back tomorrow for the next player on the list!
